Coincidence? Lich King versus Witch King
I may be a Blizzard fanboy, but I also love Battle for Middle Earth II. So the first thing I thought at the Wrath of the Lich King announcement was, WTF?
A note for historical purists: fantasy literature liches come not from the German liche (”undead corpse”), but from the original Dungeons & Dragons lich, which was directly taken from the barrow wights in The Lord of the Rings; who were themselves servants of, you guessed it, the Witch King of Angmar.
Also, Lord Sauron wants his hat back.

Read up on DnD liches before you publish next time; the lich is a template tacked onto a normal wizard/sorcerer/cleric that creates a phylactery to house his soul so that he can transcend to undeath. The lich cannot be truly destroyed without destroying the phylactery. This is far from a barrow wight.

well LOTR was a classic novel but the video games for WC3 were out before the LOTR films. As lore follows there is some possible relation or copy. Although in terms of looks; no its coincidence since the original look for the char was in a pc game before the film its impossible to say blizz copied. Tolkien had his own vision of the character when he created it. The concept art created by the film industry determined the looks for it, which may have been the complete opposite of Tolkien s vision.
Blizz may have ‘’sneaked” into the concept art base of new line cinema / LOTR and stolen these idea’s but i find this incredibly unlikely.
It could also be visa versa since the game was out before the film.
Its impossible to tell which all new know is true Tolkien fans should not judge this because its the production company who made the art for screens.

First off… Just about EVERY Fantasy game, book, etc is based off the original version of Dungeons and Dragons. Secondly.. who gives a f’in shit?
Seriously, If you are a Lord of the Rings fan, fantastic.. Glad to hear it. Same goes for WoW. Personally, I love the hell out of both. I think people should stop debating what came first, and who’s creative idea inspired whos because quite frankly, both of them exist and it doesn’t really matter.

That’s crap there have been prototypes of the witchkings helm in John Howes paintings long before WOW was ever conceived, plus you have to the 6years it took to make the film, the two years in post production and the whole lengthy process of art and design… sorry to say folks but witchkings look has pretty much been laid out for years…. do ye’re research, btw I don’t really care but it pisses me off that other people do.

If you idiots didn’t know, original Norse mythology doesn’t have the intricate syllable system that tolkiens language has. Ok, assuming that this arguement is about how similar the Lich King looks to the Witch King and Sauron, the only thing that looks even close to the same is the helmet, and yeah, they’re gonna look similar. Grab a pen and paper and draw an amor-clad dark lord. If the helmet doesn’t have spikes of any kind, you fail.
My point being that the chance that either Blizzard or Tolkein copied from eachother is EXTREMELY slim, its more than likely that they both just had common sense and put spikes on the bad guy’s helmet, just like anybody else would I’m sure.

First of all: D&D isnt any “setting”. It is a game. You can talk about “settings/histories” when you name DRAGONLANCE, FORGOTTEN REALMS (taking the “hobbit” es example, in the other 2 they are “Kender” -and totally different in uses and costumes- or “Halflings” -a race anyway way different from a hobbit. first of all a halfling like the adventures and a hobbit not.. remember Bilbo was called as kinda crazy for his beliefs-). In fact the when you talk about LOTR, you talk about MIDDLE-EARTH setting “too”. -_-
When you say “all RPG games comes from D&D” you say it cause they use the same gameplay (more or less), nor for history of similar.
Said this, all freak-minded New LOTR fans (you faggots from 2001 movies, cause real fans knows that book is 60 YEARS OLD more or less) can probably say all new histories (BALDUR’S GATE, DIABLO, WARCRAFT, FORGOTTEN REALMS, DRAGONLANCE, and many thousand more) take something from LOTR books. Happens when a new writing style comes, like music. Many books were written and classified as “Fantasy”. LOTR, as many other saga, is a Fantasy Saga, one of the best and the first obviousely, but IT IS NOT “THE FANTASY”. Its just halfminded thinkin in that way. And if i remember right, and i think i do, Tolkien’ tales have great roots in North European mithology (like viking and celtic), without needing to say that the “time” it’s clearly Medieval for much things. Who’s the robbed now? Odin? Fuck that shit about robbing, those are excuses for people who dont know what to say (in that cases the advice is to shut up and listen others talking).
Speaking about “look”, concept arts are drawn all around the world, from like 40 years ago till now. Blizzard Enterteinment and LOTR MOVIE producers are both USA, so since many really good concept artists come from USA (with THAT draw style, look at simply MARVEL, dumbasses) maybe they have both american artists… look how the fuck much times you saw The Sword of Greyskull (fuckin HE-MAN) in epic concept arts / fantasy rpg games..the helm is standard looking EVIL “SPARTAN” KING STEEL CROWN HELM, come on, you only saw that in fuckin Warcraft and LOTR?
For the lich thing, the important thing in lichs is that are great undead mages/necromancers. Than if (WARCRAFT) a Lich could be empowered bye a demon lord to become the undead king and spread the undead plague in a world or be a simply lich it’s his own businness i think. O_o

Just to resay what’s already been said (too lazy to read, sue me)
LotR books came way before LotR films/Warcraft/DnD… DnD took a lot of inspiration from LotR (but Tolkien took a lot of inspiration from norse mythologies, etc etc). As for which came up with the “Spiky evil” look first, I’d say it’s clear that FotR (sauron was in the opening scene) came out in 2001 where as Warcraft 3: Frozen Throne (Lich King armor) came out in 2003. However, neither stole the idea from the other, and I doubt either was even inspired by the other… Warcraft was in development along side LotR, they each came up with the look on their own and by coincidence it does feel fairly familiar.
Having said all that, I really don’t see much similarity in the box art. Sure, both antagonists wear plate armor, with spikes and are featured in a frontal pose… with blueish hues. Now, as far as the names go… I have no doubt Blizzard realized the similarity of Lich King and Witch King - and I would be surpised if they did not admit that inspiration for their villain came from the Tolkien villain. People really shouldn’t look down on derivative ideas, everyone takes inspiration from somewhere - as long as it’s different enough to not be infringing, it should be taken as a compliment!

Okay, wait a minute, first of all, LOTR was written way before WoW came out, and the design sketches for the movies were based off the books. Also, if you had played Wc3, you would know that a lich is undead (even though the lich king (Arthas), is still living), while the witch king is a Naz’gul and was once a mortal king before Sauron took control of him. No one “Copied” anyone; the designers for the LOTR movies were going for the look of a horse skull when they made Sauron’s helm, so they didn’t copy Blizzard, and if “Witch” and “Lich” sound similar so what? Also, why are we arguing over a comparison between a real game cover and an obviously faked up one anyway? (yes, I meant to write “faked,” not “fucked”).

World of Warcraft parodies just about every work ever made by anyone ever with huge and unhidden influence from mainly Tolkien. The environment is Tolkien-esque, they have references to LotR in “/silly” jokes as well as equipment such as “The 1 Ring” and “The 2 Ring” which is “vastly superior to The 1 Ring”.
The Lich King makes use of giant black gates and all-seeing eyes mounted on towers, but as a character I could point out as more similarities to Darth Vader than the Witch King or Sauron. He is unique enough to hold his own in comparison. And overall WoW has vastly enough differences to stand out from LotR.
WoW makes good use of fair use.
However… WoW will be dying soon if the developers don’t get their heads out of their asses. Here’s the changes WotLK made: My mains are nerfed, my twinks are normalized, all my toons need to invest more time than I have into getting soulbound non-gold currencies just to level their professions, and I need to progress in scripted PVE in order to compete competently in skill/gear based PVP.
WoW is more and more like a second job where I pay to work and don’t get that “rewarding” or “satisfied” sensation from my efforts like every other game ever made. Infact, I just can’t play WoW competitively AND have a job at the same time, so what little time I do have to play WoW, I don’t get anything out of playing it.
The WoW developers are starting to treat their game like it was Counter-Strike, an “e-sport”, and they’re failing miserably. “In CS, poor gear-progression doesn’t necessarily haunt you the next round, let alone the next day, there are no “class imbalances”, and you still stand a chance against better geared opponents so long as you can shoot them in the head before they shoot you at all, WoW by it’s very design can never be an e-sport on that level so the developers need to go back to an MMO mindset”

Look at it this way: Blizzard is notorious for deriving the bulk of their inspiration from other sources. Look at Starcraft: they made the Zerg out of a combination of Aliens and Warhammer 40k, the Terrans out of 40k’s Space Marines, and Warcraft followed the same trend. Arthas is little more than a Sauron clone, from his armor to the role as nigh-unkillable lord of darkness.
But, if their games were bad, then this would just be pathetic. Instead, Starcraft and Warcraft are good franchises, and we might as well consider all the derivations as homages more than anything else.

NO ONE would have ever to thought of taking Norse Mythology and turning it into a different world, especially some panel of video game designers looking to hit the bank. I’m personally not a fan of WoW, but I think it still deserves a measure of respect, it has to be good to have it’s 14 million players. BUT, it did not invent anything that the Lord of the Rings stole. I think they both look pretty sweet, and how the hell else would you draw the proverbial badass of ancient times? And if Witch-King doesn’t make sense, then you are looking at it too straight forward. Would you say Demon-King makes no sense? It is a demon that is also thought of as king by evil beings due to it’s power and terrifyingness. A king that is a sorcerer, or, witch, whatever.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy is an epic. Its obviously not a coincidence that WoW WOTLK (wrath of the lich king) and LOTR ROTWK (rise of the witch king) had a very similor protagonist. Ok ok people, i have been doing some reasearch, cause i felt like it, on the topic and i just want to clear things out for many people. Any fantasy themed story what ever it is make it be a pc game or a board game or just a novel that haves elves, dwarves, men, orcs whatever, is pretty much based on the ideas of J.R.R.Tolkien and his revolutionary books. He is the one who came up with the elves as good archers, dwarves as good smiths, men in the middle fighting for their cause, orcs evil and brutal and all that shit. And don’t try to say now that there is a game that has all that shit before 1945. And of course with the amount of description Tolkien gave in his novels, i am pretty sure many have imagined and drawn how each character is(modern day just made them way cooler).
