CheapyD subpoenaed over PlayStation 3 price drop leak

CheapyD of CheapAssGamer has been subpoenaed by Circuit City for information on one of his website users, speedy1961, who leaked the PlayStation 3 price drop information before E3.

Luckily for Speedy, CheapyD has no intention of giving away his information; not that he has much to begin with. To sign up for CAG, one only needs to provide a username, e-mail address, and password. CheapD does have speedy1961’s IP address, which could be passed along to Circuit City in case he’s forced to do so.

Circuit City would then subpoena the information from speedy1961’s ISP, and so on, until they were satisfied with the result (or gave up).

The legal situation highlights just how far some retailers are willing to go to protect their sale flyers. It’s also somewhat confusing; wouldn’t price drop info entice more users to buy from Circuit City? Or is the pressure actually coming from Sony, and Circuit City’s just passing the buck?

Whatever the case, CheapyD isn’t budging unless he has to go to jail, at which point it’s implied he would budge. We’ll keep you updated.
