Hacking: The worst part of BioShock

While we probably can sit here and all agree that BioShock looks to be one helluva game, it’s also safe to say that if you’ve played the demo and experienced the “hacking” portion, then you know how completely lame it is.

Resembling the old Pipe Dream PC game, the creators of BioShock seem to have taken a great game and added an element that completely slows it down and degrades it. Not only is the mini-game awful to do each time you want to hack something, but you can bypass the whole thing by paying $10 of your virtual money in the game.

The question here is: Why would you create a piss-poor mini-game for an important element of the experience and then give the player the option to just pay a fee to skip it? Why do it at all? Why not just let the players hit the “hack” button or level up some sort of hacking skill and be done with it?

We talked about it yesterday, in fact, on Epileptic Gaming:

While it may not end up being such a big deal with the game is finally released, it is discouraging to see an excellent product with excellent game design have an element that brings it down so far.
