Updated: Epic adds GameSpy to Unreal Engine 3 for PS3 & PC head to head

Epic games today it will add GameSpy’s server browsing technology to Unreal Engine 3, enabling PlayStation 3 and PC cross-platform play. Update: Epic is still undecided about cross-platform play for the upcoming Unreal Tournament 3. Since all Unreal Tournament 3 players on the PS3 and PC will be able to use keyboards and mice, there should finally be parity between the two player bases.

With GameSpy, Epic promises to bring this list of features to UE3:

* GameSpy “Matchmaking” is a robust and flexible matchmaking system that makes it easy for gamers to find suitable opponents effortlessly.

* GameSpy’s “Comrade” in-game middleware and desktop technology that enables seamless in-game to out-of-game community features, such as instant messaging, in-game voice communication, and friend rosters.

* GameSpy’s “Sake” will allow developers to store data securely online, enabling gamers to build extensive player profiles and maintain game statistics.

* GameSpy’s “ATLAS” advanced statistical system for dynamic leaderboards and tournaments within the game and on the web.

* Future feature sets developed by GameSpy will all be incorporated into the Epic Partnership.

  1. Just to be clear, mouse and keyboard support on the PS3 is a definite. Cross platform play is not; however as this article suggests there is no technical problem with making it happen. It just needs to be decided which is best for gameplay.
