eSports Awards: Poland sweeps five out of six

Poland is the big winner of the 2007 edition of the eSports Awards with five awards going to Polish gamers, winning every category where they were nominated except one. The “Turtles” were handed out at Games Convention 2007 during a live ceremony and on German television.

Polish gamers took awards in every category they were nominated in, including the most prestigious eSports Player of the Year and eSports Team of the Year. The winners were:

Breakthrough of the Year
Maciej ‘av3k’ Krzykowski

Best eSports Coverage (Uservote)

Best FPS Duel Player
Johan ‘toxic’ Quick

Best Warcraft 3 Player
Yoan ‘ToD’ Merlo

Best Counter-Strike Player
Filip ‘Neo’ Kubski

Lifetime Achievement Award
Johnathan ‘Fatal1ty’ Wendel

Best Journalist
Tim Farin & Christian Parth

Scene Journalist Award (Uservote)
David ‘Craven’ Abel & Michal ‘carmac’ Blicharz

eSports Player of the Year
Filip ‘Neo’ Kubski

Best eSports Game of the Year (Uservote)
Pro Evolution Soccer 6

eSports Team of the Year
PGS Gaming

The success of PGS Gaming can be mainly attributed to their domination in the past twelve months, winning the two most prestigious trophies in Counter-Strike 1.6 - the World Cyber Games and the Electronic Sports World Cup - and finishing on the podium nearly every single time. Their number one player NEO took two deserved trophies for individual achievements too.

The award for Av3k is also unquestionable, since the youngster really sprang up around this time last year and has been playing world class Quake 4 since then. Toxic’s award for FPS Dueler of the Year was also beyond question. The Swede could as well have won the eSports Player of the Year Award because he deserved it just as much as NEO.

The questionable choice may have been that of ToD winning the Warcraft 3 Player of the Year title. The Frenchman himself did not expect it, as he was barefoot and not ready to go anywhere when his name was read out. In the eyes of many, the World Cyber Games champion XiaoFeng “Sky” Li should have won.

I am very proud to write that I was awarded the Scene Journalist Award as well, shared with my friend from Germany, Craven from readmore.de.
