This morning Turbine announced a 7-day free trial for Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar, their Tolkien-themed MMORPG.

Eligible fans can participate in The Lord of the Rings Online trial program and play the game for 7 days free of charge. At the end of the trial, players will have the option of continuing to play LOTRO, and to keep the characters created during their 7-day free trial time, by purchasing the game either online or at retail.

“Ringers”* in North America, Australia and New Zealand can sign up at the trial site. Last week the game launched its second content update, increasing the world size by 20%. A PvP Ranger vs. Troll game was also introduced.

LOTRO is similar in look and feel to World of Warcraft, but in a serious high fantasy world based closely on The Lord of the Rings. The story line takes place in the north of Middle Earth in the earliest days of the War of the Ring.

*I have been a hardcore Tolkien nerd since the third grade. I own everything ever published and boxes full of movie crap. But I have never, ever called myself a “Ringer.”
