Man tries to return videogame, ends up in jail instead
Everyone knows how hard it is to return an opened videogame. You’ll have an easier time getting a refund for used underwear. But don’t follow the example of a northern California man, who posed as a police officer to return a copy of Cars.
Steven Scott Sather, 46 of Turlock, a tiny town south of Modesto, couldn’t get the local Target store to take back a copy of the movie tie-in game which wouldn’t run properly. So he pulled out his badge — he was a code enforcement officer for the county Department of Environmental Resources — and pretended to be a police officer. Apparently he thought cops got special treatment at Target.
His brilliant ruse failed miserably, and last month Sather was tried for impersonation of a public officer, a misdemeanor punishable by six months in jail and a fine of $2,500. The trial ended in a hung jury, and now the district attorney is considering a retrial.
There are three lessons to learn here, kids. 1.) Never buy a movie tie-in game, particularly one for a kid’s film. 2.) Don’t shop at Target, they are asshats. 3.) Working in a sewage treatment plant doesn’t make you a cop.
