An executive at Electronic Arts is calling publicly for Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo to develop a single console gaming platform.
In a BBC News interview, EA’s head of international publishing, Gerhard Florin, said, “We want an open, standard platform which is much easier than having five which are not compatible.”
“We’re platform agnostic and we definitely don’t want to have one platform which is a walled garden,” Florin said.
EA produces games for 14 different gaming systems, including consoles, portable devices and PCs.
Florin predicts the end of “dedicated consoles” within 15 years and predicts that PCs and open-source set-top boxes will become increasingly important — games will most likely be located on a remote server.
“You don’t need an Xbox 360, PS3 or Wii - the consumer won’t even realize the platform it is being played on,” he said.
The BBC quotes analyst Nick Parker, “Gaming will just require potentially a £49.99 [$100] box from Tesco made in China with a hard drive, a wi-fi connection and a games engine inside. It’s basically a boiled-down PC.”
In this scenario, Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo would become content providers for generic gaming machines.
