FOLLOWUP: Church of England forgives Sony

Manchester Cathedral in R:FoM.

The Church of England has accepted Sony’s apology for using the image of Manchester Cathedral in Resistance: Fall of Man.

Sony apologized when this “scandal” first hit in June. But they have refused to recall or alter the game.

The Very Reverend Rogers Govender, Dean of Manchester Cathedral:

I think some important lessons have been learnt. So we do forgive Sony for what they have done, even though they still believe they have done nothing wrong.

Games industry insiders, such as the one writing this blog post, say the reason Sony believes they did nothing wrong is that Sony did nothing wrong.

In an industry that is breaking new frontiers, it is important that long held traditions of film and television are maintained.

Manchester Cathedral was built beginning in 1215 A.D., and is a famous historical landmark. Film and television productions may need permission to film on the grounds of a landmark, but they do not need permission to represent it. Can you imagine if you needed permission to photograph the Eiffel Tower or the Statue of Liberty?

These traditions include having courtesy, respecting the dignity of your subject, and admitting when mistakes have been made. In so many ways Sony have failed to live up to these standards by disrespecting people of faith and the victims of gun crime here in Manchester.

The BBC reports that the depiction in the game has led to increased tourism at the Cathedral.
