i32 changes Quake 4 tournament prizing

The total pot for the i32 Quake 4 competition was lowered from $20,000 to $18,200 and the spread is now much more top-heavy than the original one.

The value of the winning check was raised from $5,500 to $10,000 and the runner up will get $5,000 instead of the original $3,500. All this at the expense of the players that do not find themselves on the top two flights of the podium.

The initial prize distribution had players that finished up to 12th place awarded with cash. After the change, only the top 5 finishers of the event will receive cash and win back some of the money they invested into coming to i32. The update may discourage many players from coming, especially those from overseas and those that are not favorites for a top 3 finish.

Compare the new and the old prize distributions:

New distribution:
1st - $10,000
2nd - $5,000
3rd - $2000
4th - $1000
5th - $200

Old distribution:
1st - $5500
2nd - $3500
3rd - $2500
4th - $2000
5th - $1500
6th - $1250
7th - $1000
8th - $750
9th - $500
10th - $500
11th - $500
12th - $500

This is BAD. Only one person will be happy about this - Toxic. The others will cringe or simply not come. Way to encourage players to play!

I hope av3k will attend, so I can see the last clash of titans in Q4. Winner will prove who really is best player in this game.

Pretty ignorant view at it Carmac. At least there is a tournament going on at ALL. And maybe there was pressure from Intel to change it? You don’t know the details.

the old prize distribution is definitely better for the players overall…. hopefully intel/i32 will switch it back as the top 12 players all deserve some form of payment. If not the top 12 at least the top 10.

Omega, ignorant is only focusing on the players that get top 3. I don’t care who pressured whom. If they run a tournament and have all the means to run it well, then they should.

The irony of arguing this is irrelevant since most can afford or will have their travel paid for them anyway. I agree that the old system was better though.
