Don Andrews on editing Up All Night, part 3

GGL’s resident video editor Don Andrews is taking us back to DigitalLife for the retelling of how Up All Night Episode 1 got made. Up All Night is our brand new reality TV review show, and you can view all our episodes so far at upallnight.ggl.com.

The original plan was to digitize the tapes as we shot on Tuesday night. We were able to digitize most of the tapes that night, but still had a couple of lingering. I think we shot 10 tapes of footage. To speed up the editing process we brought a long asecond editor, Ben. The plan was to have us both editing on Wednesday, with the hopes of us having a rough cut finished. Up All Night, originally was going to be three blocks at ten minutes each. We had an incredible task in front of us.

DigitalLife started that Wednesday and Both Ben and I were needed to work at the event the following day, so we would have to work quick. That Wednesday couldn’t have gone worse. Ben and I shared the same room at the Hotel, so naturally our room would be the best place to set up the edit suite. It was a small room. We were deficient of table space, monitors & power access.

Chachi, the producer, and I tried to steal a table from another room but were chased down the hall by the cleaning lady. We called down to the front and got an extra desk and power strips. The first task was to finish digitizing the rest of the footage. While Ben started digitizing the other tapes, I started syncing up the various camera shots. We had several delays all day that kept setting us back.

It was not looking good. At the end of the day, not much was cut and we would both have to be at Digital Life. Chachi made the call to keep me at the Hotel Thursday while Ben would work at DigitalLife. The plan was for me to cut just a three minute promo, so we could have that show people and then I would finish the edit after DigitalLife.

That night, Chachi’s cousin came over and we went to Koreatown, which is conveniently down the street. I think I had pho…but the restaurant was Korean. I don’t remember. After dinner I went back to the room. I wanted to get ahead on the cut, so I started the edit that night.

Ahhh. You’re looking pretty low on that mojito. What’s that you say? You want another one? Okay. Just pace yourself.
