Famitsu weekly rankings: Jan. 21-Jan. 27

The Wii still advances unresisted this week, just as in the last report.

The new Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 Ubiquitous Evolution made a strenuous effort and was rewarded with the #2 spot this week. Moreover, Dorabase Dramatic Stadium ranked up to #8.

U.S. gamers, this might surprise you: For this week, Lucky Star Ryouou Gakuen Outousai ranked #3. Lucky Star is a Japanese four-panel comic strip manga by Kagami Yoshimizu that is published in Comptiq.

The ranking follows: Read more »

Time for gamers to get political!

As Americans, it is our civic duty to vote. However, as gamers we often feel chastised by politicians and their views on videogames. Now is our time to rise up and be heard. Yahoo games is trying to inform gamers as to which candidate will help defend our rights to frag.

I know what you are thinking: “If I’m old enough to vote, none of these game laws affect me.” They may not affect you directly, but if these laws start getting signed, larger retailers might start pulling games off shelves which would hurt the entire industry. Take Manhunt 2, for instance. When I went to pick up my copy at my local Target, they informed me that they weren’t carrying the game due to its controversial nature. If the government starts regulating videogames, who knows what they will deem “unsuitable” for public consumption? Read more »

Portal isn’t done yet!

There’s no question that the star of Valve’s Orange Box was Portal, for me at least. That’s why I’m sure that it comes as no surprise that Valve is planning more Portal content.

As to what this content is, I am not sure. However Doug Lombardi, Valve’s marketing director, said: “There’ll be more Portal, for sure. But the details of that, to be honest, we’re still working out.”

Personally, I would prefer a Portal 2 rather than just more puzzles. I’m tching to know more about our hero and what happened to GLaDOS. Hopefully this time around, the cake won’t be a lie…

Poker Smash goes all in on XBLA Feb 6.

This must be Xbox Live Arcade’s week. First it’s announced that Rez HD and Chessmaster Live come out today. Now we hear that next Wednesday, Feb. 6, Poker Smash is coming to XBLA.

Mixing elements of poker and Tetris, this unique hybrid is the flagship title of Void Star Creations. Featuring six gameplay modes (Action mode, Puzzle Mode, Practice Mode, Custom Playlist Mode, Split Screen Head-to-Head and Miltiplayer Tournaments), Poker Smash looks to be a well polished, unique puzzler. There has been no word of price, however I’m willing to bet it’s going to be 800 Microsoft Points ($10).

Read Poker Smash on XBLA next week.

GGL’s 2007 Players of the Year nominees announced

Every year, GGL invites several prominent e-Sports coverage sites to vote for the e-Sports Players of the Year. The categories cover three e-Sports games with long traditions and histories: Quake (in this case, Quake 4), Warcraft III and Counter-Strike 1.6.

Each voter (or site) selects three players from every category and assigns them a rank from 1-3. Rank 1 receives 5 points, Rank 2 receives 3 points, and Rank 3 receives 1 point. At the end of the voting process, the points are tallied and the winners are announced. You can see the 2006 winners at GGL.com in a legacy format.

Without further ado, let’s name the 2007 nominees: Read more »

Half-life fan fiction makes my day

As an English major and wannabe fiction writer, I just had to post this as news.

It’s been a rough day for me. After a five year run, my favorite comic book, Y: The Last Man, just ended and my Xbox 360 red ringed. Pretty bad, right? It’s just been turned around by a piece of fan fiction written by a nine-year-old set in the Half-life 2 universe.

World of Warcraft generates $1.2 billion in 2007

Most game studios dream about making $1.2 billion for their parent companies on a yearly basis. Blizzard is living that dream as we speak.

Vivendi Games, parent company of the Irvine, CA-based Blizzard, generated €1.02 billion last year, or around $1.8 billion in USD monopoly money. Of that, €814 million ($1.2 billion USD) came directly from World of Warcraft.

We all knew it was printing money, but, geez. Still, you should know that figure doesn’t refer to profit, which is calculated after business expenses such as salaries, server maintenance, and Mike Morhaime’s blow fund are deducted. Now you know…and knowing is half the battle!

WoW Burning Crusade: The Chinese Timeline

GGL’s Reid Landeen translated this GGL China article.

World of Warcraft had a tumultuous 2007 in China, with the release of The Burning Crusade expansion and addition of many new players. Here’s a journal-style rundown of the year for TBC in China and around the world.

Jan. 16, 2007
World of Warcraft’s first expansion, The Burning Crusade, ships to North America and Europe.

March 8, 2007
Blizzard Entertainment announced today that WoW’s expansion (The Burning Crusade) has already sold more than 3.5 million copies in North America. In the first 24 hours of release, it sold more than 2.4 million copies, which is more than any PC game has ever sold in a single month. Blizzard’s President, Mike Morhaime explained, “The passion that gamers have for The Burning Crusade makes us feel really excited.” At this time, Chinese gamers did not know when The Burning Crusade would be released in China.
