Destructoid is all agog because Fallout 3 is going to have 200 or more possible endings.
This is certainly interesting, but D-toid’s only concern here is, will it be worth it to try to play all 200?
First off, I’m suspicious that those 200 are actually all variants of a handful of real endings. “I reached the final level with the blue armor, and got the cut scene with the guy in the mustache. Now I’m going back for the red armor and the guy with the pompadour.”
In fact, here’s a telling quote from Wikipedia: “…[has] over 240 variations of the final cutscene [emphasis mine], which was determined by all of the actions taken by the player.”
Second, I doubt Bethesda wants you to try. I think what they’re going for here is a little thing called storytelling. They want you to have as unique a game play experience as possible.
You know one day, kiddies, role-playing computer games will advance to the point where it will be impossible to exactly replicate a game experience, either your own or someone else’s. This will be bad news for only two kinds of people — those who feel the need to experience every possible variation within a game; and those who think you have to “play all the way through” to assign a game a rating.
Me, I’ll be happy just to finish the game once (if such a game-of-the-future even has a “finish”) and be proud that no one else did it just the way I did.
