PS3 getting 65nm GPU this fall

Yesterday Sony Computer Entertainment’s CEO, Kaz Hirai announced that all PS3s produced after this past holiday are equipped with the 65nm Cell processor. This is an upgrade over the previous 90nm that were installed at launch. In addition to this news, Kaz also announced that this fall, the RSX graphics chip will also be making a jump to 65nm.

This new GPU means PS3s will be cheaper to make and use less energy. This might mean that a price drop will be coming sometime this year, but don’t hold me to that. Sony is hoping to make back some cash after the PS3 cost them $3.32 billion.
