MLG’s Tsquared to appear on Dr. Pepper bottles
Today Dr Pepper took a step in furthering competitive gaming as a legitimate sport. The company announced that it’s supporting a pro-gamer for its first national distribution deal for an athlete.
Tom Taylor, known on the Major League Gaming’s circuit as “Tsquared,” will appear on 20-ounce bottles of Dr Pepper from Jan. to Apr. in 2009. In total, Tsquared’s face will appear on 175 million bottles, that is, 80% of the bottles produced. No details on how much Tsquared was paid were revealed.
With the Championship Gaming Series going under yesterday, joining a whole host of gaming tournaments that attempted to persuade popular culture that gaming is a sport, this is an uplifting note. A major company like Dr Pepper might have the resources to bring competitive gaming to the forefront of modern society’s mind.

[...] The Halo and Call of Duty Franchises are wandering these days in that dreaded wasteland between major events, awaiting some sign from Major League Gaming (MLG) that the first-person shooter titles are a financial bet worth taking. In the past, Pro Circuit events were the best way for a professional gamer to make his face known to the community and attract sponsorship deals. It’s a safe bet that those giant posters of Tom “Tsquared” Taylor that MLG used to hang at events factored into Dr. Pepper’s decision to put the 2008 National Champion’s face on 175 million bottles of the soda in 2008-2009.
