Shock of shocks: Lich King sales crush all others

World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King sold 2.8 million copies within 24 hours of its release worldwide, to the surprise of absolutely no one, making it the fastest selling game of all time.

Just to put this in perspective, 2.8 million copies at $39.99 equals close to $112 million in a day’s time. Of course, this number isn’t entirely accurate because in places like Korea the game is free and they pay for blocks of subscription time, but you get the picture. Here’s how the Lich King is feeling right now:

Blizzard president Mike Morhaime said: “We’re grateful for the incredible support that players around the world have continued to show for World of Warcraft. Wrath of the Lich King contains some of the best content we’ve created for the game so far, and we look forward to seeing even more players log in to experience it in the days ahead.”

Morhaime then lit a cigar with a hundred dollar bill, levitated away on a magic carpet while so-called journalists watched, stunned, and took a nap on a pillow of money. It’s good to be the king.

Any way you cut it, I’m pretty sure Blizzard isn’t feeling the recession.
