Killzone 2 demo access with pre-order

PlayStation 3 owners everywhere are counting down the days until Killzone 2 is released on Feb. 27. Gamestop announced today that in order to get the Killzone 2 demo you have to pre-order the game. Available both in store and online, gamers just need to fork over $5 to get demo access. Those who buy it in store will get a card with a code that has access to the demo. Those who choose to pre-order it online will receive the code via email. Demo access begins on Feb 3. There are no details as to how long the demo will be or what it will feature.

What do you guys think about this? Personally I’m not a big fan of the pre-order to get the demo thing. I always felt that demos existed to help boost sales, not satiate the ravenous hunger of fan boys. Let us know what you think by leaving a comment below.

Release Roundup: Dec. 28

It is well known in the gaming community that the week after Christmas is a notoriously bad time for new games to come out, making this week’s “Release Roundup” seem futile. I was contemplating not writing this, but then it hit me: Who am I to judge the games that come out this week? Who knows; maybe one of you might really get into one of these titles.

Leaving all my pretentiousness at the door, here are the games hitting stores this week.

PC Games:

  • Insecticide

For the rest of the games, hit the jump. Read more »

New Left 4 Dead content announcement coming soon

Some details have emerged about the forthcoming downloadable content for Valve’s zombie survival horror shooter. According to Valve writer, Chet Faliszek a proper announcement on the new content was due ‘before Christmas’. In this Kotaku video podcast, Faliszek confirmed that the new material will include additional scenarios: …what we want to do is just deliver more content you can play at this point. He added that the new content will be released simultaneously for te PC and Xbox 360, unlike …

Valve discusses Left 4 Dead DLC

In a recent interview, Valve writer Chet Faliszek revealed some details about Left 4 Dead and downloadable content. According to Faliszek, the first batch of DLC will arrive “shortly.”

While specific details were slim, Faliszek stated that Valve will release new scenarios for both the Xbox 360 and PC which will arrive on both platforms at the same time. Also included in future patches will be the addition of the Dead Air and Death Toll campaigns in versus mode. Faliszek also revealed that PC owners can expect a Left 4 Dead SDK, allowing gamers to create custom maps and modifications.

There was no discussion of DLC price, however it is expected that PC gamers will get the new content for free. Xbox 360 gamers probably won’t be as lucky.

Worlds.com files suit against NCsoft over MMO patent bullshit

On Christmas Eve, Worlds.com, a company I’ve never heard of likely because it’s never done anything worthwhile, left a steaming pile on NCsoft’s doorstep. It filed a lawsuit claiming that NCsoft infringed on an obscure patent, #7,181,690 - System and method for enabling users to interact in a virtual space, in bread-and-butter MMOs like Guild Wars and City of Heroes/Villains.

This isn’t as much a case of NCsoft infringing on proprietary technology as it is a case of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office sucking more than a $2.33 hooker by awarding such a vague patent to begin with.

After all, the kindly-worded press release in which I received this information noted that this patent, and another owned by Worlds.com (#6,219,045 - Scalable virtual world chat client-server system), could apply to all 3D worlds everywhere. Somewhere on the internet, an owl is hooting mockingly.

The explanation behind all this? Naturally, Worlds.com is hoping for an easy settlement. It has a patent but no obvious technology aside from a screenshot showing a floating IBM cube in a pixelated Second Life environment, while NCsoft has MMOs that are reasonably well-known in the west and are/were explosively popular in Asia. I can thusly sum up the challenger’s business model in four easy steps:

BAGL Call of Duty: WW competition heads to brackets!

After a ladder phase fraught with disputes and bitter defeats, the Big Air Gaming League’s Call of Duty: World at War competition has moved into its bracket portion.

16 teams advanced to the brackets, and cramming matches into the last week of ladder play definitely catapulted a couple of teams to the next level. So far, no matches have been played in the bracket (thanks, Christmas), but here are our matchups:

#1 [W]icktown [K]illas vs. #16 TeaM FeaR

#2 Team cAv vs. #15 American Bad Ass

After taking over the top spot in the ladder, cAv fell to 2nd in the scramble at the end of the ladder phase. Still, 2nd seed isn’t bad, and could work out for them in the end.

#3 3rd_Degree vs. #14 Contrakt Killers

Call of Duty 4: DAMN:EU v0.59 released

Not to be confused with the reported release of DAMN:MW 0.59 earlier this week, the developers of the competitive mod have released a new version specifically designed to fit the needs of the European scene - DAMN:EU v0.59. The purpose of this new mod is said to be to unite the community under a single rule set, but with the same being said about Promod 4, DAMN:EU v0.59 looks like it’s just going to rock the boat. The change list does however, look pretty good from a competitive point of view. But …
