Is MTV/Viacom buying Kotaku and Gawker?

mtvkotaku2.jpg

As a very close follower of trends within the gaming media space, one particular interesting trend has stuck out to me over the past week: Kotaku, a property of the blog group Gawker Media, has gone out of their way to mention and include everything related to MTV. Now, it could be coincidence that MTV and its related media properties are particularly hot this week, but sometimes the phrase “where there’s smoke, there’s fire” comes out to actually be true.

Everyday this week there has been an increased focus on MTV and Viacom properties. With guest blogger and GameTrailers and Spike TV (both Viacom properties) correspondent Geoff Keighley taking guest editor duties all week, the co-branding is either a somewhat blatant advertising deal or an even bigger deal involving the potential sell of Gawker to Viacom — a company trying to increase its videogame presence more and more.

GGL studio gets an upgrade

As GGL prepares for another season of Epileptic Gaming and even more quality shows to come (like “Up All Night”), we took the steps to improve our studio in which we broadcast out of. Take a look at the work in progress and make sure you tune in on Monday, Nov. 5, for the new season of Epileptic Gaming.

At last! Warhawk v1.1 patch coming Nov. 1

All Warhawk fans have been patiently waiting for the v1.1 patch that is expected to fix the stats problem. Dylan Jobe just posted this announcement:

FINALLY! — and Yes…I realize this was a loooong time coming :-P
We are going to be globally deploying the v1.1 during an extended maintenance window Friday, November 2nd between 5am and 9am Pacific. To recap, here are the items addressed by the patch:

Server-side
* Stat database stability improvements
* Improved server stability
* Max Clan limit changed from 32 to 64
* Viral Rank-up bug fixed and correct for players that were accidentally ranked up.
* “Time-in-Vehicle” Stats fixed so certain awards can now be granted properly.
Client-side (this is the one that you will actually download to your PS3)
* Stat connection, fetch/post fixes
* Significantly improved client connection stability
* Quad “????” Ping display bug fixed.
* Added support for Player-Ranked Servers.
* Game synchronization fixes due to fluctuating network conditions (packet-drop).
* Crash fixes for end of game and split screen.

A couple of things that I want to point out. Some of you were able to download the v1.1 patch before it was “officially” ready. Since this occurred without the server-side updates to compliment it, not all of the fixes would have functioned. Specifically the viral-rank-up fix and the time-in-vehicle stat fix. Once we bring the system back online Friday, 9am Pacific, these fixes will be functional.
Also, once we deploy the patch, when you boot Warhawk, you will be prompted by the XMB to download the v1.1 patch. This is a fast download so it’s not a time killer. Once the XMB has pulled the patch down, Warhawk will boot back up and be happy! You will also notice a “v1.1″ in the lower right corner of the screen.
So…we’ll be monitoring the roll-out tomorrow and this weekend so please check the forums for any updates We’ll also be updating the announcements text today as well.
I would also like to extend a heart-felt “Welcome Back!” to our talented QA, SCERT and PDIT teams in San Diego. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, they are the ones “behind the curtain” making a lot of this happen and its great to have them back!
As Always…Rock on!

Team DC takes home Sierra and GameStop tourney top spot

wicmain.jpg

Team DC (Don’t Care) breezed through a Sierra and GameStop 5v5 World in Conflict tourney that netted them a free trip to Los Angeles and a host of other prizes. The crew took on TwentyID in a best of three final yesterday in Los Angeles and quickly dispatched their opponents by winning the first two rounds.

“We had no problem at all getting through,” said Team DC Captain Blake Midstokke. “The great thing about World in Conflict is that it’s not really about individual skill, but really more about team skill. We spent a lot of time building a team and learning to work as a team.”

Each member of Team DC received a $500 GameStop gift card, NVIDIA 8800 GTS graphics card, Logitech Premium USB Headset 35, and a World in Conflict track jacket.

Army of Two pushed back to 2008

army_of_two2.jpg

In an attempt to add further polish to their anticipated co-op title, the folks at EA and Army of Two have decided to push the game from its scheduled 2007 release time to the first quarter of 2008. Army of Two Executive Producer Alan Tascan spoke with 1UP about the decision to delay this exciting next-gen title:

The announcement is that we’re pushing the game to Q1 of next year and the reason is based on the feedback we’ve had internally and externally. We just want to add extra polish to the game — I think everyone would want that. Our job is to delight the customer and we feel that we need more time to add the polish.

… This game has been in development since — well, we started it about a year after we opened the studio, and we opened the studio in 2004, so it was sometime in 2005. It’s completely in the range of every game that’s out today, within 3-6 months. Whether it’s Halo 3, Assassin’s Creed, or Call of Duty, we’re exactly in the same range, or in some cases a little bit shorter — and we’ve built a studio at the same time.

Halo 3 cheaters be warned: Bungie is coming for you

halostopsmall.jpgBungie has sent out an official warning to all potential cheaters in Halo 3 and now it seems anyone and everyone could be subject to a certain level of ban hammer usage. The devs posted this general statement:

There are those of you doing things you shouldn’t be in Halo 3. Some of you have gotten a little too famous for your own good. This ain’t a church and there is no redemption or salvation once you have been judged. Apologies are now officially too late to save you.

The storm approaches.

Love, Bungie

Sony confirms U.S. 40GB PS3, 80GB price drop

ps3side.jpgFollowing in line with the other announcements in Europe and Japan concerning the 40GB version of the PlayStation 3, Sony confirmed today that the U.S. would also be getting the cost-reduction treatment. Sony Computer Entertainment President Jack Tretton confirmed the deal today to Reuters with these details:

A 40GB PS3 priced at $400 will launch in the U.S. on Nov. 2 and the price of the 80GB PS3 will be cut $500. Just as in Europe and Japan, the 40GB PS3 will not be backward compatible with PlayStation 2 titles.

He told Reuters: “We’re choosing to focus on the PlayStation 2 consumer with the PlayStation 2, which remains incredibly relevant, and focus on the PlayStation 3 consumer with the new 40GB model and the great software coming out. Backward compatibility is a nice secondary consideration, but it’s far from the number-one priority.”
