The echoe of the World Cyber Games scandal with teams winning crucial matches due to calls made by referees are still resounding. Anton “Cyclone” Lapshenkov, a WCG finals referee has posted a blog where he talks about the insider’s perspective on the controversy in the WCG Counter-Strike competition.

Lapshenkov was one of the referees of the eSTRO vs. MYM match. In the blog, he claims that he was excluded from the discussion between the Koreans and the referees and clearly takes the side of the Norwegians. The result of the game was changed, even though the match documents were signed. Towards the end of the event, the Russian decided to resign as a WCG referee. (more…)

CPL announces $1 million Halo 3 tournament

In a huge step for pro gaming, the Cyberathlete Professional League has announced today they will be giving away $1 million in total prize money for an open Halo 3 competition at the Extreme Winter Championships taking place Tuesday, Dec. 18 to Saturday, Dec. 22 at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Dallas, Texas.

CPL founder Angel Munoz gave GGL all the details on this monumental tournament for the year’s hottest-selling game, the Xbox 360’s Halo 3. Here is official word from the CPL regarding the announcement and how anyone can take part:

The Cyberathlete Professional League® (CPL®) announces that it will host a $1,000,000 “Halo® 3″ Xbox 360™ competition at the Extreme Winter Championships taking place Tuesday, December 18 to Saturday, December 22, 2007 at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Dallas, Texas.

The winner of the $1,000,000 “Halo 3″ Xbox 360 competition will receive a $250,000 instant cash payout at the CPL Winter event. Other prizes will be paid to at least 64 places. The competition is open to gamers worldwide and does not require pre-qualification or previous tournament experience.

The online registration will open Tuesday, October 30th. More information will be available on Monday, October 29th at Halo3Competition.com

GGL’s ‘Up All Night’ schedule announced

Following the success of the pilot episode of GGL’s new videogame review show, “Up All Night,” the cast and crew are preparing for a season of even more unique and entertaining episodes that will take you beyond the standard review. Upcoming episodes and dates have now been announced. Here are the titles that you can expect to see:

Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games: Going beyond the living room environment, the “Up All Night” crew will deliver an experience completely unique to this exciting game from Sega for the Nintendo Wii. The episode is set to shoot on Nov. 6.

Rock Band: Planned to be a complete experience, GGL’s Rock Band episode of “Up All Night” will be one of the most interactive shows of the year — surprises are absolutely in store. The episode is set to shoot in early December.

Orange Box (PS3): Since the PC and Xbox 360 versions are already out, the “Up All Night” crew will be looking to put their own unique spin on the PlayStation 3 version of the game. How will it stack up to the already released versions? Find out in late December.

Team DC takes home Sierra and GameStop tourney top spot

Team DC (Don’t Care) breezed through a Sierra and GameStop 5v5 World in Conflict tourney that netted them a free trip to Los Angeles and a host of other prizes. The crew took on TwentyID in a best of three final yesterday in Los Angeles and quickly dispatched their opponents by winning the first two rounds.

“We had no problem at all getting through,” said Team DC Captain Blake Midstokke. “The great thing about World in Conflict is that it’s not really about individual skill, but really more about team skill. We spent a lot of time building a team and learning to work as a team.”

Each member of Team DC received a $500 GameStop gift card, NVIDIA 8800 GTS graphics card, Logitech Premium USB Headset 35, and a World in Conflict track jacket.

I’ve been in Seattle since Tuesday and this is the first chance I got to do anything fun other than eat apple danishes and have intestinal problems, so I jumped at the chance to play g0d-Ms.X in a game of Quake 3 at the Razer booth. Little did I know what was in store for me … or did I?

World Cyber Games 2007 blog: Day 1 begins

Well, it’s the first day of the World Cyber Games 2007 Grand Finals, and what better way to start it off than with an apple danish guaranteed to give you diabetes? djWHEAT and Tasteless geek out with Starcraft talk while kam-RA gets his insulin on. Check it.

P.S - I met a blast from the past right after we got off the bus today. It was none other than Joseph “Dy-Syng” Kim, a Canadian ex-Quake 3 player who I used to play with back in 2000-2001. He also happened to be an extremely good player. These days, he’s the head referee for the World Cyber Games. It’s always fun to catch up with old-school deathmatchers and I’ll try to get that elusive beast on camera soon.

Things are a bit dead at the World Cyber Games 2007 Grand Finals venue, but I did manage to catch the staff setting up the Project Gotham Racing 4 display. Check out them moving around two Aston Martins, a Ford GT40, Shelby Cobra, and Lotus Elise (I think, anyway; my automotive knowledge is failing me).

By the way, all the mic checks and beatboxing are part of rehearsals. Sorry about that.

We’re at the Qwest Event Center here in Seattle, sitting on a concrete floor, bringing you updates from the World Cyber Games 2007 Grand Final. The GGL Wire crew hooked up with Tom “SeeD” Conerly and Stuart “Django” Ewen last night at our hotel, and will meet up with more broadcasters today to round out the full coverage crew.

Breakfast was … disappointing, to say the least. However, I just saw some pretty badass cars at the Project Gotham Racing 4 area, which made up for it. Check the videos.
