If you’ve been following the Call of Duty: World at War Map Pack 1 tournament here on GGL, you’ll know that we saw a big shakeup last week.
Unfortunately one of the server chimps in our server room slipped on a banana peel and reset the competition.
Oddly enough, many of the top teams from before the reset have risen close to the top of the heap again. That’s good news, data loss notwithstanding. We’ll make sure it never happens again, so here are your standings for this week:
| box 360 | : | PlayStation 3 | ||||||||
| Rank | Team | Points | Win/Loss | Streak | : | Rank | Team | Points | Win/Loss | Streak |
| 1 | Tactics | 2320 | 13/1 | 9W | : | 1 | Rapesauce | 2170 | 11/4 | 2L |
| 2 | Bolt Action Killers | 2320 | 13/1 | 11W | : | 2 | COD Godz | 2100 | 11/0 | 11W |
| 3 | Alcoholics | 2200 | 11/9 | 2W | : | 3 | Plumberz | 2090 | 11/5 | 2L |
| 4 | LagStars | 2100 | 11/0 | 18W | : | 4 | RAID | 2040 | 9/8 | 3L |
| 5 | Universal Soldier Queue | 2010 | 9/11 | 1L | : | 5 | Gods O War | 1950 | 10/2 | 2W |
Tactics and Bolt Action Killers are tied for the lead on the Xbox 360 ladder. These guys have been going at it for a couple of weeks now but are playing lower ranked teams to maintain their standings. Man up and play. This isn’t a “feast on lower ranked teams for prizes” ladder.
On the PS3 side of things, Rapesauce continue to hold first place but face a strong challenge from newcomers COD Godz.
We’ll keep an eye on the tournament as it progresses and these hardened competitors battle it out for supremacy and prizes.
While there are no new Xbox 360 or PS3 games this week, there is Demigod on the PC.
Some of you might be asking, “What’s Demigod?” For those of you who don’t know, Demigod takes the basic structure of the breakout Warcraft III mod Defense of the Ancients and attempts to distill it to perfection. Players can choose one of 8 demigods, each with their own unique play style and abilities, and throw them into an epic battle where they must turn the tides.
While there are currently eight demigods to choose from, Gas Powered Games has stated that it plans on releasing additional demigods as downloadable content.
I have always been a fan of DotA, but felt that because it is built in Warcraft III it can be optimized. Demigod takes DotA to the next level with great graphics and optimized gameplay. I can’t wait to give Demigod a try when it comes out.

After a few bank meltdowns, bailouts and seething anger from the Average Joe, we’re all ready to admit it: The economy is in rough shape. Jobs are hard to come by and many people are having trouble covering basic necessities. This leaves many gamers, myself included, struggling to scrape together enough cash to pick up new games.
With that in mind, GGL decided to list the Top 5 ways to game your way through the recession.
Follow these guidelines to soothe your aching wallet, support developers and patronize local businesses as the economy goes down the toilet!
It’s pretty rare to find box copies of games on sale in retail stores; however, the Interwebs are ripe with sites that offer discounted games. When short on cash, look to CheapAssGamer.com. The folks over at CAG compile all the current deals and promotions into an easy to navigate list.
If PC gaming is your thing, Steam is a no-brainer. There’s always some sort of discount or promotion happening and this past winter, Valve ran a 10%-75% off promotion sitewide. It’s hard to beat $5 for Bioshock, and Steam Weekend Deals are always around.
This sort of advice normally should go without saying, but it’s uninformed consumers that keep overpriced big box stores in business. If you can educate a fellow gamer to buy online, you’ll be “teaching him to fish.” And if you encourage people to buy from Steam, you’ll support a platform that gives independent developers a place to shine–and a cut of the proceeds.
To commemorate the launch of the first map pack for Call of Duty: World at War, GGL, Activision and Treyarch are running the World at War Map Pack 1 Tournament on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 with $2,000 in Call of Duty prize packs!

Two interesting gaming tidbits from the iPhone OS preview event: In-game DLC and peer to peer multiplayer support over BlueTooth will arrive with the update due this summer.
The DLC feature allows iPhone developers to access iPhone OS prompts, letting you buy items or clothing. In the example given below from Engadget, the iPhone game Livefire shows off its ability to sell you a rocket launcher for $.99.
Whether or not the in-game DLC will sell is up to the market, but don’t discount it just yet. While many hardcore gamers balk at the concept of DLC, the micropayment model of the iTunes App Store already makes some developers hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Okay, so it’s not Solid Snake, but it is David Hayter, the voice and real life doppelganger of Solid Snake. Close enough.
Variety reports that Hayter (who co-wrote the X-Men and Watchmen movies, by the way) just founded Dark Hero Studios along with producer Benedict Carver. The studio focuses on action, horror, and sci-fi entertainment across several different mediums: Games, movies, and TV.
According to Carver, “David will create, write and direct movies and TV series for the company, but he’ll also be a magnet for other writers and directors to work with us.”
Currently, Snake–I mean Hayter–is working on werewolf thriller Slaughter’s Road.
Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 owners won’t be seeing any major releases this week, but never fear: the DS, PSP and PC platforms are doing well, with some major handheld titles coming your way.
For example, both Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars and Resistance: Retribution hit this week, as well as Trackmania DS. Read below for the full list!

This week’s Release Roundup brings us one of the most anticipated games of the year, Resident Evil 5.
RE5 is the seventh game in the Resident Evil series and picks up after Leon’s adventures in RE4. Players will take control of Chris Redfield (or Sheva Alomar in co-op) as he travels to the made-up country of Kijuju in Africa to investigate/combat the spread of the parasites from RE4.
RE5 marks the first game in the RE series to be on current generation consoles. It is also the first RE game to feature co-op. Needless to say, expectations are high.
The games coming out this week are:
Xbox 360
