GGN MsNaru: What do you get when you cross videogames, anime and the City of Sin?

Why Anime Vegas of course! Las Vegas is known for its gorgeous showgirls, flamboyant magicians, instant millionaires, fast paced nightlife, mind-blowing shows, and now for the fastest growing Anime convention in the nation, Anime Vegas! Over this past Labor Day weekend, the Cashman Center, in the heart of downtown Las Vegas, played host to the 4th annual Anime Vegas convention headed by founder — and all around nice guy — Rich Stott. I had the pleasure of speaking with Erin Murray, head of AV Human Resources and lovingly nicknamed “Minion Mistress” (I’ll explain later!). She was kind enough to answer my questions about what it’s like to host an anime convention in Sin City.

GGN Review: Carnival Games

I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I actually found a game on the Wii that held my attention for more than 20 minutes. After playing more than 8 hours of this game over the course of two days, I felt that the utter magnitude of this event warranted its own post.

GGN Scarlett_Dawn: Is it too expensive to be a gamer?

So, you think that I am an ungrateful elitist or behind the times? Maybe. You think that maybe I am just cheap? Most definitely. You can think whatever you like, but the fact is BioShock, the freshly-released game for the Xbox 360, is on sale at your local GameStop for $59.99. Now you might not think this is a big deal, in which case you are probably enjoying the game as we speak. But some of us are on a little bit tighter of a budget.

GGN Virtualgirl: Can you escape your inner-nerd?

In your rush to join the daily grind, you run out of the house after throwing on a t-shirt, jeans and a baseball cap to cover your bed-head and dark-circled eyes.

As you unlock your car with your keys clinging to a Nintendo lanyard, you realize you are wearing a Street Fighter shirt, a Mario baseball cap, and are toting a backpack blanketed in various buttons from your favorite videogame franchises. Adding icing to the cake, before you can decide if it’s worth changing clothes, your thoughts are interrupted by Final Fantasy VII’s victory fanfare coming from your phone.

OK, it might not have happened that exact way to you, but have you ever had a day when you realized that it might be impossible to escape your inner nerd?

GGN GamingAngel: Who is the King of Kong

This summer has seen two films about retro gaming, Chasing Ghosts and King of Kong: Fistful of Quarters, with both based on the 1982 LIFE Magazine article that assembled the World’s Greatest Gamers for a photo shoot. At the time, Walter Day had created Twin Galaxies to become the place to submit all electronic game scores. Twin Galaxies set the rules and standards and also posted a list of the top players across the nation.

GGN Raychul: What type of gamer are you?

In my many years of experience in video game retail, and in my recent experiences at random gaming events, I have come to notice the many different gamer stereotypes and how intertwined they all are. The main three categories of gamers are “the gangsta”, “the nerd”, and “the tool” – though if you mix and match some of these, you will breed new stereotypes. Beware — you might just fall into one of these groups.
