Korean WCG qualifer for StarCraft heats up
Things are heating up in the Korean WCG qualifier for StarCraft as the competition goes into the quarterfinals. Hwasin and Stork are the 7th and 8th player in the final eight.
Earlier today, Jin “Hwasin” Yung Soo defeated the Blizzcon 2007 runner up, Kang “Nal_rA” Min and Song “Stork” Byung Goo beat Oh “AnyTime” Yeong Jong. Both games ended with 2-0 scores.
The final eight of the tournament is pretty evenly-balenced in terms of player races. We have three Terran players in there, three Protoss and two Zergs. Once you consider that Ma “sAviOr” Jae Yoon counts for two, there is a complete equilibrium there.
All quarterfinal games will be played on Friday. The entire competition will end on August 19. Here is the elimination bracket:
Much vs. Hwasin
sAviOr vs. Light
JulyZerg vs. Stork
Free vs. Sea
The early rounds of the qualifier have brought many less than expected outcomes. Players that did not make it this far include:
* the WCG 2006 champion Choi “IloveOOv” Yun Sung
* the TeamLiquid PowerRank number 1 Kim “Bisu” Taek Yong
* the WCG 2006 bronze medalist Jun “Midas” Sang Wook
* the only three-times Starleague winner Lee “NaDa” Yoon Yeol
The Korean players are doing their best to sent the least celebrated lineup of players to the finals in Seattle. Of course, this will not stop them from being the favorites to get their seventh consecutive WCG championship in StarCraft.
