iPhone OS 3.0 includes in-game DLC, P2P multiplayer

Two interesting gaming tidbits from the iPhone OS preview event: In-game DLC and peer to peer multiplayer support over BlueTooth will arrive with the update due this summer.

The DLC feature allows iPhone developers to access iPhone OS prompts, letting you buy items or clothing. In the example given below from Engadget, the iPhone game Livefire shows off its ability to sell you a rocket launcher for $.99.

Whether or not the in-game DLC will sell is up to the market, but don’t discount it just yet. While many hardcore gamers balk at the concept of DLC, the micropayment model of the iTunes App Store already makes some developers hundreds of thousands of dollars.

On the P2P multiplayer front, applications can now search for other iPhones in their vicinity and allow users to challenge each other. Bluetooth makes it possible!

We’ve just barely scratched the surface here; a multitude of new features (such as copy & paste) are included in the OS. Hit Engadget for the full report.
