A couple of days ago I wrote a news item about how Blizzard Entertainment plans on implementing achievements in World of Warcraft. Well this is just the first phase in a larger plan. According to Blizzard, they plan on implementing achievements into all their upcoming titles. Apparently, there will be a Blizzard Level system which totals your achievements to a single Blizzard account.

Jeff Kaplan, World of Warcraft designer, said: “Your ‘WoW’ score would be just one factor that will go into your Blizzard Level. And rather than call it a ’score,’ we just wanted it to be like you’re leveling up on Blizzard games… You’ll have this Blizzard identity, and you’ll be able to see things like ‘Oh, this guy was great at Diablo III, but he never played Starcraft and he was mediocre in WoW. That sort of thing.”

This is a great idea. The only issue I have with it is that Blizzard’s games are already addictive. Now with achievements I think they surpass cigarettes and are on par with heroin.

Blizzard announced today that tickets for this October’s BlizzCon are going on sale this Monday, Aug 11. Costing $100 a piece, the ticket grants you access to panels, concerts, giveaways, the whole spectacle. BlizzCon will be held at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California.

If you don’t have the money to make the trip, don’t worry. Blizzard and Direct TV have teamed up to bring the whole event to your living room. BlizzCon will be a “pay per view event [that] will deliver a minimum of eight hours of live HD coverage from the show floor on each day of the convention, including exclusive interviews, demos, and more.”

Last week, Blizzard Entertainment launched a new site with some pretty radical changes, namely the introduction of a digital download store. For the first time, gamers can purchase digital copies of Warcraft III, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, and StarCraft Anthology. More games (Diablo) are promised to be added later on.

This is just what I needed. As someone who has lost or destroyed three copies of StarCraft, I can’t justify buying physical copies anymore. Now I don’t have to deal with awkward store clerks and waste gas when I need to get my Craft on.

Blizzard has released more details on its upcoming World of Warcraft tournament, showcasing NPCs who will equip you for all your battles.

In what I consider to be a brilliant move, the tournament will not require players to level up their characters. Instead, you will start at level 70 and get free epics in order to compete–separating the PVP and PVE portions of the game, hopefully, forever.

Gold will be obtained by speaking to an NPC gold giver. If you ask him/her for gold, you’ll get an easy 5,000 in order to pay for respecs, repair damage, and buy pretty much whatever you want. Speak to another NPC to get free epic items, and so on. Continued…

Today Blizzard Entertainment announced that they will be hosting a series of tournaments using the Arena system in World of Warcraft. Competitors will come from Europe, South Korea, North America, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau and will have to pay a $20.00 entry fee.

Due to the fact that you don’t need to level a character to play in the tournament, and epic/arena-quality gear is available from the start, all 10 million-plus WoW players are potential competitors.

The tournament will run for six weeks on special tournament realms. Throughout these six weeks, teams will play 3-vs.-3 matches. The top four teams from each round will advance to the regional finals. Here players will compete for more than $27,000 in cash prizes. Those who win the regional will then move on to a global championship event. At the championship event, players will then compete for $120,000 in cash prizes, including a $75,000 grand prize.

Competitors won’t actually be using their characters they put all that time and effort into leveling. When they go to make a character on the special realm, they will “instantly create level-70 characters with epic equipment.” According to Blizzard, this is to place the focus “on tactics and execution rather than normal adventuring.” Continued…
