For those of you who don’t know, today is Bungie Day. That means that on Xbox Live, you can get themes and gamerpics free. Also free, is the new Halo 3 map Cold Storage. If haven’t picked up the Legendary Map Pack, you might want to; the price is cut to only 600 Microsoft points ($7.50). Not a bad deal to breath some new life into an old game.

If there is one thing I like about Bungie, it’s their celebrations. They are always giving away themes and gamerpics as well as cutting prices on DLC whenever a holiday rolls around. Whether it’s Cinco de Mayo or Bungie Day, you can always count on some sort of celebration.

In honor of Cinco de Mayo, the good folk over at Bungie are hosting a Halo 3 Double XP weekend. Starting today, not only will players receive double xp, but a new playlist for Fiesta called “Cinco de Mayo.” In order to play the new Fiesta playlist you need the Heroic and the Legendary map packs. The Southwestern celebration will keep the midnight tequila burning until Tuesday, so get your xp while you can.

A couple days ago, I posted a news item about the new Halo 3 map pack. Unfortunately, I was unable to verify the last map in the pack; today it was revealed that the last map in the pack will be “Blackout,” a remake of Halo 2’s “Lockout.”

Along with this announcement, Bungie also posted an interview with four of the map’s creators. It’s pretty interesting read; especially if you are interested in the map making scene.

Halo 3’s Legendary map pack comes out April 15 and will cost you 800 Microsoft Points ($10).

Today it was announced that a new Halo 3 map pack will be arriving April 15. Named the “Legendary Map Pack,” it will consist of “Avalanche,” “Ghost Town” and one other unannounced map.

“Avalanche” is the spiritual successor of Halo’s “Sidewinder.” According to Bungie, it won’t be exactly the same, but its U-shape design should feel familiar to old school gamers.

“Ghost Town” takes gamers to an old dilapidated African themed arena. According to Bungie, “Ghost Town” is well suited for One Flag, One Bomb, FFA and Team Slayer game modes.

The guys over at Bungie answered some questions about the map pack. The post can be found here. The map pack will cost you 800 Microsoft Points ($10) and will be out April 15. Drop us a comment letting us know if you are going to get it or not.

Bungie is working on Halloween-themed content for Halo 3 this week.

Bungie’s Frankie:

Our multiplayer design teams are hard at work on a couple of things. One of them is a fun, seasonal addition to the matchmaking playlist which should keep you entertained for about 27 hours around Halloween. No specifics yet, but suffice it to say that if you want to spend your witchy holiday playing Halo 3, we’ll give you some spooktacular reasons to do so.

Do you and a friend think you’ve got what it takes to be the best Halo 3 players around? Prove it on our new Halo 3 ladder with a maximum prize purse of $10,000, beginning Oct. 24 (Oct. 23rd, 9:01PM PST on the west coast)!

There is no registration deadline; you can register for the duration of the ladder, but if you want a part of the cash, you can’t let the other teams get a head start on you!

The GGL is kicking in $3,000 to start with for this ladder, but will add $1 per person after 3,000 to the prize purse, up to a maximum of $10,000.

What does it all mean? Tell your friends to join this competition if you want to make more money. The more that join, the more money there’s available to win.

Here’s the prize breakdown:

Prize purse: $3,000 minimum
1st: 40% ($4,000 max)
2nd: 20% ($2,000 max)
3rd: 10% ($1,000 max)
4th: 10% ($1,000 max)
5th-8th: 2.5% ($250 max)

The competition format is a ladder that feeds into a bracket, seeded by ladder results. The number of teams that advance to the bracket is dependent on the number of total participants. We’re currently running a 1v1 practice ladder that you can use to shake the rust off. To join, visit GGL’s Halo 3 1v1 practice ladder page and hit “JOIN LADDER.”

The $10,000 2v2 Ladder begins Oct. 24th and runs until Dec. 2. The brackets start Dec. 5. Full rules are available under the “Rules” tab on the Halo 3 2v2 Celebration Ladder landing page.

halostopsmall.jpgBungie has sent out an official warning to all potential cheaters in Halo 3 and now it seems anyone and everyone could be subject to a certain level of ban hammer usage. The devs posted this general statement:

There are those of you doing things you shouldn’t be in Halo 3. Some of you have gotten a little too famous for your own good. This ain’t a church and there is no redemption or salvation once you have been judged. Apologies are now officially too late to save you.

The storm approaches.

Love, Bungie
