While the official deadline for Digital Games bracket completion has passed, some matches haven’t been reported yet. Let’s have a look at the medalists so far!
European Counter-Strike 1.6 is complete, and The Skurvels have taken gold after a win over esuba.HAL3000.cs1.6. Congrats to the Polish powerhouse!
In North American of Duty 4 (PS3), meanwhile, DeathB4Dishonor dishonored the memory of Teflon Hearts and took gold! They’re followed by Xbox 360 NA counterparts Team OMG, who defeated Hellz Remedy. Multi-gaming team LowLandLions KO’d TeamDruidz in PC European CoD4. And last, but most certainly not least, #1 seed Ready to Kill Clan completed a rout of the South American PC bracket with a win over Nex Impetus.
On the RTS side of things, KhuFu_Ownz won the North American C&C3:Kane’s Wrath bracket, defeating KiFireLedius. [x17]Pill dropped ~FireFly~ on his head 3-0 to win the Asia/Oceania C&C3:KW bracket, and knolz sealed victory in Europe by topping golfplayer.
Next up: StarCraft: Brood War. This classic title’s North American bracket was overrun by Brol1’s Zerg swarm. LML did the same to the European SC:BW bracket. Continued…
Due to the intricacies of ladder play, dmZfederal (41-18, 5730, 1L) has dethroned Paladyn as the points leader on the Digital Games European Warcraft III: TFT ladder.
Although dmZfederal doesn’t have more wins than Paladyn, who has a 47-6 record, he does have more total games played. Since players get points for playing a match regardless of winning, it’s possible to rise to the top of the heap despite a worse record.
Activity is king in ladder play, and speaking of which, there’s some more interesting news from a game that hasn’t been too active until lately.
While the number of matches in the 2008 Digital Games continues to ratchet up, higher than average activity is beginning to show on the North American NHL 08 360 ladder. Continued…

Of note is the poll that ran several months ago on the GGL site; six of the top eight games from the poll have been selected for the Digital Games program (though I question the polling audience, as DoTA, an incredibly popular game, ranked very low on the poll). Here’s the poll image (follow the jump): Continued…
Almost right after Blizzard released its no-CD patch, IceFrog followed with a new Defense of the Ancients map update. The new map features an enormous changelog, from balancing and reworking heroes to moving creep camps and trees all over the map.
A blast from the past, the Invoker makes a return to the world of DotA. After being an easter egg in 6.49, IceFrog brought back the old Invoker. The hero follows a completely different model, using a combination of three separate “settings” to create other skills. The model uses a Blood Mage with a white cloak.
While most competitions use the most updated version of a game, the map will probably not be included in the upcoming E-Sports World Cup event. This is due to balance issues, new items, and the fact that any new heroes are generally banned anyway.
Currently, 6.48b remains the stable map for league play.
The highly anticipated ESWC Defense of the Ancients tournament has released more details about the upcoming event.
Yesterday, the ruleset was released in .pdf format on the ESWC website. Aside from the “no trap rule,” the rules are fairly standard.
ESWC looks like it’s sticking to the formats most commonly played among all the leagues.
For those who care but don’t want to read:
- Map Version 6.48b
- Extended League mode (-xl format, -ap in game)
- Pit Lord, Undyin, Dark Seer, Templar Assassin, Sacred Warrior, Storm Spirit, and Faerie Dragon are banned. Continued…
The E-Sports World Cup has left France.
ESWC boss Mattieu Dallon has made good on his promise to keep at least some semblance of the ESWC in its home country, however, and the organization today announced the ESWC Masters for July 4-6, 2008 in Paris Bercy.
ESWC Masters will be an invite competition for all the official ESWC disciplines, including Defense of the Ancients, Trackmania Nations, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, Counter-Strike 1.6 (mixed and ladies) and (hail to the king, baby!) Quake 3. The winners will all receive berths into the Grand Final.
Prizing, autoberth, and qualification details will be released at a later date.
If I were asked to describe the development of Defense of the Ancients within the past year, only one word comes to mind: upheaval.

2007 heralded over fifteen DotA maps released to the public, a handful of new heroes and items introduced into the title, and the emergence of a multitude of new international teams and superstars. Only this month, the German multi-gaming organization MouseSports announced the addition of the DotA squad Back to Basics. This comes on the heels of SK-Gaming’s very own announcement of a DotA sponsorship; it seems that everyone these days wants to get a piece of the pie. MouseSports and SK-Gaming increase the number of “big name” multi-gaming organizations supporting DotA to six: Meet Your Makers, SK-Gaming, eMazing Gaming, MouseSports, Virtus.pro, and Team Pandemic. It was announced today that Quake 3 and Defense of the Ancients are official competition games for the 2008 season of the Electronic Sports World Cup. At the same time, the future of Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 in the competition is uncertain.
The full lineup of ESWC games for today is Counter-Strike 1.6 (male and female competitions), Warcraft 3, Trackmania Nations ESWC, Quake 3 and DotA. The selection of Q3 as a game is not that surprising - the game has always been a very significant title for the ESWC. Some of the most memorable matches in the game’s history took place at the French event. The title also has a larger following than Quake 4 and looks like a better long-term platform, considering that QuakeZero will be based on Quake 3.
Considering that well over 90% of Warcraft 3 games played online are DotA matches, the choice of DotA for ESWC is not that surprising either. Competitive DotA has grown rapidly in recent times, with many online competitions for the game.
It may be that Pro Evolution Soccer will not come back to ESWC. At this stage, the game is suspended, as the organizers of the ESWC have not yet received a permission from Konami to use the game in their event.

Last month Total Gaming League (TGL) announced official sponsorship of the highly successful Defense of the Ancients pickup match league, DXDLeague (currently known as Total DXD). In conjunction with Total DXD, Total Gaming League would facilitate tournaments approximately every thirty to sixty days; thus, Battle for the Throne (BFTT) was born.
I recently had the opportunity to sit down and speak to Jeff “Hunter_” Hunter, head administrator of Total DXD and commissioner of Battle for the Throne, to receive some more details on the tournament.
GGL Wire: Please introduce yourself and provide a little of information about yourself.
Jefferey Hunter: My name is Jeffery Hunter and I currently reside in Modesto, California. I am employed at the local school district; my official title is Information Technology Coordinator.
GGL Wire: Who contacted whom first; TGL or yourself? Please provide a little insight on how DXD and TGL became involved with one another.
Total Gaming League’s owner, Greg Howard, was at the time working with a colleague of mine who had previously managed Check Six Gaming (our former sponsor). He suggested that I should speak to Greg about becoming involved with his network of gaming organizations. The first time I spoke to Greg it was mutually apparent that we had very similar goals and ambitions, and a shared love for the e-Sport community. Continued…
