EA announces Uprising expansion for Red Alert 3

EA announced today that an expansion to Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 is in development. The expansion, titled Uprising, will only be available on the PC and will be released though digital distribution. EA also stated that it will be a stand-alone expansion, meaning you don’t have to own Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 to play it.

What new features can you expect from Uprising? Well aside from the typical new units, Uprising will come packaged with four mini-campaigns, three for the existing factions and one that details the origins of Yuriko, the commando for the Empire of the Rising Sun. A new game mode titled “Commander’s Challenge” will also be included in Uprising. This game mode lets you duke it out against nine commanders from different territories. Each commander has different difficulty level, their own rule and conditions for victory. In total there will be 50 challenges. You can also expect to see more live-action cinematics featuring many of the same actors from Red Alert 3. Read more »

EA ditches Tiberium

Today EA announced that their second venture into a Command & Conquer first-person shooter, Tiberium, has been canceled. Apparently, EA thought that the game didn’t meet quality standards.

According to Mike Verdu, head of EA LA: “The game had fundamental design challenges from the start. We fought to correct the issues, but we were not successful; the game just isn’t coming together well enough to meet our own quality expectations as well as those of our consumers. Unfortunately, this action will result in several individuals on the team being released. We will make every effort to place affected individuals on projects within the studio–and where that isn’t possible, to connect them with opportunities in other teams at EA.”

If you were to ask me, I’d say something fishy is going on. EA has never had a problem releasing games that were a little low on the quality standards. What I think happened was that the stock market plummeted and EA has to make cuts. Either way C&C fans are just going to have to make do with Red Alert 3.
