Real hockey fans may know who Dion Phaneuf is, but I’d wager he’s no Wayne Gretzky. That is to say, he doesn’t transcend his sport in the manner of other superstars.

However, the capitalist machine marches on, and a new athlete must appear on the cover of EA Games’ NHL 09. Phaneuf is the man this year.

NHL 09 features a number of cool gameplay elements, including the return of the Skill Stick system, as well as the new Defensive Skill Stick, which allow you to make fine-tuned adjustments to your puck-slapping skills. It also has 6v6 online play, which could be pretty amazing if everyone plays their positions properly.

See this excerpt from the press release:

Players new to the series can now shoot, pass and check with ease. NHL 09 features Be A Pro, a game mode that will put you on the ice with a dynamic new 3rd person camera that allows you to play the role of one player. With a performance tracker grading your progress in more than 50 categories, you will know exactly where you need to improve to become the next NHL superstar.

Although the story made the rounds a month ago on techwatch blog TechCrunch, Electronic Arts has just now made the news official.

The megapublisher purchased ThreeSF (founded by Shawn Fanning of Napster fame), makers of Rupture, a gaming social networking platform that keeps track of achievements across numerous PC and Xbox 360 games.

Rupture began its tracking with a World of Warcraft UI mod, but has now expanded to include Halo 3, Guitar Hero III, Team Fortress 2 and Madden 08.

Here’s the full (brief) press release from EA:

Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ:ERTS) today announced it has acquired ThreeSF, Inc., a social network for gamers. Financial terms were not disclosed. More information about EA’s plans for ThreeSF will be available in the weeks ahead.

Word on the net is EA is planning on releasing a Rock Band 2 at some point. What evidence do we have? Other than Rock Band being one of the most lucrative games of last year, EA has been conducting surveys about Rock Band 2.

According to the survey, Rock Band 2 will be a full game, not just an expansion pack. It will make a leap in difficulty, much like Guitar Hero to Guitar Hero II. One of the questions dealt with pricing. Apparently EA is kicking around the idea of selling the full instrument package for $199, $169, or $149. The survey also asks what the chances are of buying Rock Band 2 over a similar game, aka Guitar Hero 4. Some other changes mentioned in the survey deal with an online version of World Tour mode, the ability to record music videos, a Battle of the Bands feature, and a drum trainer mode.

Now remember this is all rumors and speculation. All of this is subject to change. I personally did not take part in the survey, although I wish I had (EA feel free to email me).

Kotaku Australia (this exists?) reports that EA’s Australian branch informed them that the upcoming, cartoon-styled shooter, Battlefield Heroes will be exclusive to the US and Europe.

Considering the game is downloadable, so far it’s unclear how EA will control this.

But they’ll certainly find a way. While EA was unable to explain the reasons behind such a decision, the common guess is that it wants to try the free-to-play system in a more closed environment and see the reaction of the public before releasing it worldwide.

Alternatively, we could simply say that Australia is being spared from having a possibly bad game, but less choice is never better…right?

EA Games has announced that they are making a new game in the Battlefield series. Battlefield Heroes will be a free online multiplayer shooter with Team Fortress 2-esque graphics. Money will be made via in-game advertising and microtransactions.

I have been a fan of the Battlefield games for some time–I love the unique blend of vehicle and infantry combat, along with the control point game mechanics. So naturally, I can’t wait to get my hand on Battlefield Heroes, however the price has me worrying. Can we get AAA quality from a free game?

Carlos Alberto Simões de Tomaz, judge at the Minas Gerais’ District Court in Brazil, has decreed that both Counter-Strike 1.6 and EverQuest should be removed from the country.

Procon, a federal institution (ironically) created to defend consumers rights, has already started to remove all copies of both games from every store in the state of Góias, the first one to suffer the ban. This federal entity has also started investigating internet cafés that have to eliminate these games from all their computers. If any internet cafés don’t follow the court order, they will have to pay 3000 dollars and face being closed.

As of now, EA (responsible for the distribution of both games in Brazil) stated that it hasn’t been formally notified of the court order.

The custom CS1.6 map “cs_rio,” which is allegedly used as a test simulator for terrorists, is fingered as the reason for the game’s ban. As for banning EverQuest, Brazilian authorities claim that it leads the gamers “to total disorientation and psychological conflicts,” which is probably true. You’d have to be disoriented to keep playing EverQuest.

Update: Only distribution of these titles has been banned in Brazil.

It seems like consumers finally started voting with their wallets, as EA’s “reorganization” has begun in earnest with the shutdown of EA Chicago.

An allegedly leaked memo obtained by Kotaku had this to say:

Unfortunately, EA Chicago hasn’t been able to meet that standard. The location has grown dramatically in the past three years while revenue from the games developed there has not. The number of employees has grown from 49 in 2004 to 146 people currently in the new facility in downtown Chicago. As it stands, EA Chicago has no expectation of hitting our profitability targets until FY2011 or later.

The Chicago studio created the Def Jam series of games as well as the Fight Night franchise. EA Chicago only lasted a year at its physical address before getting the axe. Who’s next?
