ESL to build esports stadium?

Turtle Entertainment has got plans to build a venue dedicated for competitive gaming competitions. In cooperation with kadawittfeldarchitektur and RWTH Aachen University, the mother company of the Electronic Sports League is holding a contest for the model of an esports arena.

Thirty-five students will work on a prototype for an esports stadium. Such a venue would have a 10,000 spectators capacity and facilitate all the needs of esports events organizers as well as the press. The winning project will be shown at Games Convention in Leipzig next year. Its creator will be awarded 1,000 Euro and “perhaps the task of building the arena.”

Such a venue may be built in Cologne, Germany, the home city of the ESL, but not until 2020. The project is aimed at giving ideas on how to improve their current live shows. ESL’s events draw crowds in between 800 and 2,500 on a regular basis.

The weekend’s ESL Extreme Masters Main Round Warcraft 3 matches featured Grubby taking on two different opponents. In his first match, the Orc, Grubby, found himself opposite LiiLD.C, and in his second match Grubby would face DowaQ.

Grubby vs. LiiLD.C started off on Secret Valley where the Dutchman took a 1-0 lead. The Night Elf LiilD.C managed to tie up the score when he defeated Grubby on Twisted Meadows to make the score 1-1. In the deciding round on Echo Isles Grubby beat LiiLD.C to earn a solid 2-1 victory in his first match of the Extreme Masters Main Round. Continued…

Pandemic has added another title to their World of Warcraft 3v3 Arena trophy cabinet by winning ESL’s WoW 3v3 tournament at DreamHack. MoB’s TurtleForce and TurtlePower took second and third place, respectively.

The American team has got an impeccable record in the game. They have won every single event for 3v3 that they entered. But in Sweden, the lineup of Nathan “Kintt” Quinn, Greg “Ecilam” Risselada and Mason “Nitrana” Groendal came closer to defeat than ever - they lost the upper bracket semi final but came back to win the grand final in two sets. The fans did not find out whether it is Pandemic or MoB.TurtleForce that is the best WoW 3v3 team in the world. The $45,000 check for first place will have to gather dust until tomorrow, as the final of ESL’s WoW tournament at DreamHack was rescheduled for 14:00 CET Saturday.

If there was one tournament where the big favorites were to be shocked, it was this one. It was organized in to salvage the 2007 WoW Arena season, so abruptly ended by the shutdown of the World Series of Video Games. Blizzard and ESL decided to pick up the pieces and hold a $75,000 event to give the teams a chance to cross their virtual swords one last time. Continued…

The MoB TurtleForce team beat their from MoB TurtlePower in the upper bracket final of ESL’s WoW 3v3 Arena tournament at DreamHack. They are now waiting for whoever comes out of the lower bracket to fight them for $45,000 for first place.

The match attracted a full mini-stadium of people in Hall C of DreamHack and a packed stand near the ESL area. Apparently, World of Warcraft is not as bad a spectator game it is claimed. Perhaps more than in any other country, the title has got mainstream appeal. It is enough to say that the jaw of the waiter in a restaurant in the center of Jonkoping dropped to the very floor when he found out that he was serving food to Blizzard employees that made the game. It is not Pandemic but two MoB teams with a guaranteed top 3 finish in ESL’s 3v3 World of Warcraft Arena tournament at DreamHack. The teams tipped to take the top two places, Pandemic and Fnatic.Insurrection fell to the slight underdogs in the upper bracket semi finals.

“Oh my god,” were the only words the charismatic Godfather, MoB’s manager, had to say right after the win. He had a good reason to be happy, since both semi finals started off really bad for his teams. Pandemic and Fnatic.Insurrection had TurtlePower (in the picture) and TurtleForce, respectively, hanging on by a thread starting off 2-0. It ended 2-3 in either case. Continued…

Unexpectedly, but according to the initial plan, World of Warcraft is having its final tournament in 2007 at DreamHack. The top eight teams from the World Series of Video Games rankings were invited to Sweden by Blizzard and Intel to close the season in a $75,000 tournament ran by ESL.

The competition is Blizzard’s initiative. A lot of times, this company has proven that the people in it care about the community. After the cancellation of the WSVG, the creators of WoW have decided that the players deserve to have the season finished. In a way, this event is the continuation of the WSVG, although the ESL people dislike this way of seeing things. A perpetuation or not, the winners here at DreamHack will be the last World of Warcraft champions in 2007. Continued…
