Serious Sam remake on the horizon

serioussam1Today Majesco announced that a downloadable version of Croteam’s Serious Sam: The First Encounter will arrive on PC and Xbox 360 later this year.

The remake, dubbed Serious Sam: The First Encounter HD, boasts four player online co-op as well as revamped graphics.

Original Sam developer Croteam is handling the remake with a little help coming from Devolver Digital, a new “production and publishing company” based out of Texas. Croteam CEO Roman Ribaric stated, “The fans have lobbied us hard to do this, so we are stoked about bringing Sam back as big, bold and bad as he ever was.”

Majesco has stated that Serious Sam: The First Encounter HD will hit Xbox Live Marketplace later this summer and will cost 1200 MS points ($15). The PC version will see release this fall.

$2,500 Call of Duty: World at War Map Pack 2 Tournament kicks off

codwaw200Today marks the official launch of GGL’s $2,500 Call of Duty: World at War Map Pack 2 Tournament on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Unlike the first tournament, this one actually features $2,500 in cash prizing.

Head on over to GGL’s CoD:WW game page to get started in the tournament.

A few old names are kicking around on the team list right now, with more sure to follow. Hate Us have signed up for a war in the trenches again on the PS3, while I see Gamers United posted on the Xbox 360 ladder waiting for battle.

Stay tuned for match coverage of this tournament as it happens!

COD:WW Map Pack 2 surpasses a million sold

codwaw200The folks over at Treyarch seem to have their act together. Each map pack they release for Call of Duty: World at War seems to break new records. Today Activision announced that the Call of Duty: World at War Map Pack 2 has broken 1 million downloads.

Originally released June 11, the $10 map pack adds three new multiplayer maps and one new Nazi Zombie map.

Personally this doesn’t surprise me at all. I feel safe in assuming that 75% of the people who bought Map Pack 2 did so only to get a new Nazi Zombie map. If you guys haven’t checked out the Nazi zombie mode, you’re missing out. Nothing like co-op and the undead to send sales through the roof.

MAG developer diary released

Since it was first announced way back at E3 2008, Zipper Interactive’s MAG has been garnering a lot of attention. I guess that comes easy when your are selling a PS3 exclusive, 256 player first-person shooter.

Today Zipper Interactive released the first of, hopefully, many developer diaries. In the video, lead gamer designer Andy Beaudoin discusses the story line of MAG.

According to Beaudoin, the game, which is set 25 years into the future, focuses on private military contractors fighting a “shadow war.” The story may sound a little predictable, but it’s expected from a multiplayer only title.

Aside from the story, the video shows some interesting in-game footage. If you ask me, MAG is shaping up to be on my must have list for this fall.

Valve announces Left 4 Dead 2

Update: Valve has announced that L4D2 will feature AI Director 2.0, which will procedurally change the weather, objects in the world, effects, sounds, and enemy population.  L4D2 will also feature new weapons, items and boss zombies. Valve has stated that it will arrive with more content than the original, meaning more campaigns, Versus mode maps and Survival mode levels.
Today at Microsoft’s E3 keynote, Valve announced that they are currently developing Left 4 Dead 2 for the PC and Xbox 360. To make this announcement even better, Valve stated that L4D2 is slated to arrive Nov 17.

As the trailer shows, there are four new survivors in a variety of new locations. There also seems to be a focus on melee weapons, including frying pans and chainsaws. In the trailer there seems to be at least one new boss monster, however it could just be a new model of the tank.

You can be sure that I’ll post updates as new information arrives.

Battlefield 1943 packs an unlockable map

Today DICE sent word that Battlefield 1943 will contain four maps, not three; but there is a catch. The company is setting “a worldwide community challenge” to unlock the fourth map, which is a remake of the Battlefield 1942 classic Coral Sea.

In order to unlock Coral Sea, players will have to do a lot of killing. You see, the map only becomes available once there have been 43 million kills in BF1943.

For those of you who didn’t play BF1942, Coral Sea features two opposing aircraft carriers with little islands speckled between them. There is a heavy focus on air to air dog fighting. Personally, I love this map and am so very excited that it is included.

Battlefield 1943 is scheduled to hit the Xbox 360 and PS3 sometime in June and will cost $15. The PC version will arrive in Sept. and will feature more in depth gameplay than the consoles.

Dead Space Extraction hits Sept. 29

Dead Space Extraction

Today EA announced that Dead Space Extraction, the Wii exclusive prequel to Dead Space, will arrive in North American stores on Sept. 29. Europeans can expect it on Oct. 2.

Dead Space Extraction is an on-rails first-person shooter set before the events of Dead Space. It offers multiple paths for gamers to explore, both on their own and with a friend via two-player co-op. Also, Extraction introduces “an important new heroine to the Dead Space universe.”

Hopefully the sci-fi horror of Dead Space will transition smoothly to a FPS on rails. If so, we might have a new House of the Dead, except this time in space.

GGL CoD:WW, Resistance: Retribution ladders end

gglrotator5-26-09-codww-resistance-200

Update: View the Resistance: Retribution brackets here: 2v2 and 4v4.

With $27,000 in prize packs on the line, hardened competitors went to battle on the GGL ladders this weekend to finalize their standing on our Call of Duty: World at War (Xbox 360 and PS3) and Resistance: Retribution (2v2 and 4v4 on PSP) ladders.

The dust is settling now, and we have two #1s from CoD:WW and two first seeds from the R:R competitions. A few administrative tasks need to be sorted out before we can officially declare the winners, but right now LagStars (CoD:WW 360), Hate Us (CoD:WW PS3), ARJUN (R:R 2v2) and Six Feet Under (R:R 4v4) are in control.

Note that the Resistance: Retribution competition will be going into a bracket format with the top teams immediately after ladder winners are verified, so there’s still more action to come.

Congratulations to all the winners!

Nintendo announces Metroid Prime Trilogy

metroid prime 3Today Nintendo announced they it will be releasing a Metroid Prime Trilogy bundle for the Wii. The bundle, set to arrive Aug. 24,  comes with the first two GameCube Metroid Primes along with the Wii’s Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.

The Trilogy, retailing for $49.99, puts all three games onto one disc. Both Metroid Prime 1 and 2 will have updated controls made specifically for the Wii.

Personally I could never get into the Metroid Prime games. There’s just something about playing a FPS on the Wii that makes my skin crawl. Hopefully I’ll be able to over come this prejudice because I’ve heard that the Prime trilogy is awesome. What do you guys think? Is a Metroid Prime Trilogy appealing? Let us know by leaving a comment below.

Killzone 2’s Flash and Thunder DLC hits June 11

250px-killzone2_box_artToday Sony sent word that the second batch of DLC for the PS3 exclusive shooter Killzone 2 will arrive in the European PlayStation Store on June 11. While it wasn’t officially announced, I feel safe in assuming the DLC will hit the North American PlayStation Store on the same date.

The second batch of DLC, dubbed “The Flash and Thunder Pack,” will contain remakes of two Killzone maps: Beach head and Southern Hills.

Sony has yet to announce a price, however gamers are expecting to shell out $5.99, which is the price of the “Steel and Titanium” map pack.
