Last Monday marked the end of the second season of the Championship Gaming Series (CGS). The season concluded with the climatic World Final match between the San Francisco Optx and Birmingham Salvo. The Salvo won the match, making the British team the league’s first international champions. With the season finished, GGL is here to take a look back at the 2008 competition and provide a possible glimpse into what 2009 may hold for the CGS.

The Competition

This year’s competition was certainly more intense than that of season one. An influx of new talent combined with the improved performance of many season one vets resulted in matches whose outcome Nostradamus would be hard-pressed to predict. There were fewer players who absolutely dominated their respective fields. Returning players often faced tougher battles. Perhaps the best example is San Francisco’s Dead or Alive 4 (DOA4) female player Vanessa, who experienced her first two regulation losses ever this season to Dallas’s new fighter, Phoenix. Likewise, Carolina Core’s DOA4 male player OffbeatNinja, who went nearly undefeated in 2007, stumbled a bit at the start of season two. OffbeatNinja’s missteps was one of the factors that allowed Dallas’s Master to rise up and dominate much of the DOA4 male competition. Continued…

Months of intense competition came to a conclusion with Monday night’s CGS World Final match between the San Francisco Optx and Birmingham Salvo. These two teams were all that remained of the original eighteen that began season two of the Championship Gaming Series. It has been a long road for both franchises. San Francisco barely got into the semi-finals. It took a dramatic win over 3D.NY in the wildcard qualifier to secure their place in further competition. Meanwhile, Birmingham earned its place in the final only after a narrow one-point, overtime victory against the Carolina Core.

Tonight’s climatic match began with Forza 2. Birmingham’s Daveyskills took the lead after slamming into San Francisco’s Sackamonjaro at the start of the race. A determined Sackamonjaro kept close and attempted to knock Daveyskills out with a collision early in the second lap. Daveyskills nevertheless managed to stay ahead and finished the race in first place. Sackamonjaro followed in second, with Birmingham’s Picaso and San Francisco’s Miximup finishing in third and fourth respectively. Birmingham now held an early 5-2 lead over San Francisco.

Birmingham’s player Bazza scored two goals early in the first half of the FIFA 08 match. He knocked the ball into Stermy’s net for a third time, but the goal was declared invalid because Bazza’s player was off-sides. Stermy finally got on the board after scoring a goal with only seconds left in the first half. Despite strong vocal support from San Francisco’s fans, Stermy could not tie the game in the second half. As a result, Bazza won the match, 2-1. Continued…

After nearly two months of competition, only four teams remained out of the original sixteen international franchises. These four teams would be further whittled down to a mere two based upon the results of Monday’s pair of semi-final matches. The two victorious teams will go on to compete against one another in the season two World Championship Final on July 28.

San Francisco Optx vs. Berlin Allianz

Vanessa showed why she is the woman to beat in Dead or Alive 4 (DOA4) female by dominating Berlin’s Liefje, 5-1, on the DWA Coliseum. Berlin responded with a victory in FIFA 08. Its player Manyna made three goals to Stermy’s one in the first half. This 3-1 point differential would last through the second half, resulting in a win for Manyna.

Despite some interference by Berlin’s YggdrasiL, San Francisco’s Miximup maintained the lead for most of the Forza 2 race. YggdrasiL and his companion FinPro had pushed San Francisco’s other racer, Sackamonjaro, into fourth by the third lap. Miximup finished first with Yggdrasil and FinPro in second and third. The overall score was now 10-7 with San Francisco still in the lead.

The DOA4 male match followed a similar pattern to the earlier bout between their female counterparts. San Francisco’s NinjaCW came out swinging and by the time the dust cleared, he had picked up a 5-1 victory over THE_TACTICAL on the Temple on the Mountain. Continued…

GGL’s David Taylor conducted this interview prior to recent CGS results (MEGA spoilers!).

Mark Dolven is no stranger to a hard fight. The general manager of the Carolina Core made his mark on the pro-gaming community as the leader of Team Pandemic before leaving his post to join the Championship Gaming Series (CGS). During the 2007 season, Dolven led Carolina to second place finishes in both the North American and World Finals. His franchise suffered defeat on both occasions to the Chicago Chimera.

The Carolina Core’s 2008 season started out well. Gradually, however, the franchise fell into a slump. As the season progressed, it seemed increasingly unlikely that the Core would make it back to the play-offs. Toward the end of the season their fortunes began to improve and with a little luck, the Core made it into the play-offs by the skin of their teeth. With the slate wiped clean, the team found new confidence and vigorously fought its way to the semi-finals with a victory over the Wuhan Dragon.

GGL spoke with Mark Dolven the weekend before Carolina’s semi-final match against the Birmingham Salvo. The winner of this match would go on to compete in the 2008 World Final. Dolven spoke about his team’s comeback, the influence of traditional sports on his management style, and expressed some criticisms of the CGS draft.

GGL: You must be riding high these past few days. How does it feel now that the Core made it back to the semi-finals?

Mark Dolven: It’s great to be back in the semi-finals. Last year we had an amazing match against Berlin in the semi-finals and we expect nothing less against Birmingham. The match-up with Wuhan was much more of a blowout than we expected. They are a great team with great players. They have a lot of respect for everyone they play. We thought that they were going to play a little bit better, but I think our team was just on its game. Continued…

Wednesday night’s Championship Gaming Series quarterfinal matches would determine the ultimate make up of next Monday’s semi-finals. In the first match, the Birmingham Salvo faced off against the Mexico City Furia. In the second, North American champions the Carolina Core fought the Wuhan Dragon. Of these four teams, only two would join the San Francisco Optx and Berlin Allianz in the semi-finals.

Birmingham Salvo vs. Mexico City Furia

Dead or Alive 4 (DOA4) male opened the night with a match between Birmingham’s Messy and Mexico City’s player El Divino Xmas on the DWA Coliseum stage. The match began competitive, but things quickly went downhill for El Divino Xmas. His 2-5 loss to Messy was the result.

Mexico City’s Zerocero scored the first goal in the subsequent FIFA 08 game. The first and second halves flew by with neither player earning another point. As a result, Zerocero beat Birmingham’s Bazza, 1-0.

Birmingham led 5-3 going into the night’s first Forza 2 race. Any immediate hopes Mexico City had of taking the lead were quickly dashed as Birmingham’s racers, Picaso and Daveyskills, sped into first and second place. Birmingham now led 11-4 with two games remaining. Continued…

Berlin Allianz vs. Sydney Underground

Berlin’s player Liefje opened the night with a decisive 5-1 victory over Sydney’s Eileen in Dead or Alive 4 (DOA4) female. The first FIFA 08 match of the evening followed this victory. Both players were tied, 1-1, at the end of the first half. Berlin’s Manyna scored his final point in the second. Despite his best efforts, Sydney’s Haroutig10 could not tie the game and as a result Manyna gave Berlin another win, 2-1.

With the score at 7-2 in Berlin’s favor, Sydney could not afford to lose badly in any of the remaining games. Unfortunately for Sydney, its player Berzerk experienced a sobering 0-5 loss to Berlin’s THE_TACTICAL in DOA4 male. Sydney’s bad luck continued with Forza 2. The Berlin racing team showed why they won the individual title on last Saturday by beating Sydney, 5-2.

Berlin now led by a dramatic 17-4 lead. The only hope Sydney had of winning was the long-shot chance that it could pull off a near perfect showing in Counter-Strike: Source (CS:S). Berlin dashed these hopes after beating Sydney in the first half, 5-4. Sydney performed better in the second half as the counter-terrorists and won the CS:S game by a narrow 10-9 margin. This was, however, a bittersweet victory for Sydney for the franchise had lost to Berlin, 26-14. Berlin now goes on to compete in the semi-finals.

The World Individual Competitions of the Championship Gaming Series took place this past Saturday. In this competition the best players from each region squared off against one another to determine, independent of their franchises, who was truly the best in their individual games.

Dead or Alive 4 (DOA4) Female

In the first match on Seaside Market, Birmingham’s SarahLou defeated Sydney’s Eileen, 5-1. Meanwhile, in the second match, San Francisco’s Vanessa beat Mexico City’s Hitomi1 by a slightly closer 5-2 margin. This outcome meant that Vanessa would face SarahLou in the final match of the DOA4 female competition. SarahLou performed extremely well and led 3-1 going into the fifth round. Vanessa, however, won the next four rounds, and closed the game with a 5-3 lead.

FIFA 08

Rio’s Patan faced Wuhan’s ZZ in the first FIFA 08 game. Patan scored two points to ZZ’s one in the first half. Patan then secured this lead with a single point in the second half. This won him the match, 3-1. Next up was a match between Berlin’s Manaya and Chicago’s Eafra. By the end of the second half, both players were tied 1-1. This lead to a shoot-out, in which Eafra won by a single point, 3-2. Eafra now had to defeat Patan to earn the individual championship title. The match was considerably more one-sided than Eafra’s game against Manaya. The North American champ won 2-0 over Patan and claimed his title. Continued…

The outcome of Thursday night’s matches would determine the ultimate make-up of the World Finals. First up was the Latin American Final, where the Mexico City Furia faced off against the Rio Sinistro.  This bout was followed by the Pan-Asia Final between the Wuhan Dragon and Sydney Underground.

Mexico City Furia vs. Rio Sinistro

The first franchise match of the night opened with Dead or Alive 4 (DOA4) male on the DWA Coliseum.  Both players chose Ninja Gaiden star Ryu Hayabusa, as their fighter.  Rio’s SnakeJorge took the first round.  The Rio player however would not score another point as El Divino Xmas won the next five rounds in a row.  His win gave Mexico City an early 5-1 lead.

Rio managed to prevent Mexico from pulling further ahead after Patan won FIFA 08, 1-0, over Zerocero. This was followed by DOA4 female on the Kyoto in Bloom stage. Mexico’s Hitomi1 and Rio’s Yo Succubus traded the first and second rounds respectively. From there Hitomi1 defeated Yo Succubus four rounds in a row, winning the game for Mexico, 5-1.

The total score was now 10-3 with Mexico in the lead. Rio would need to perform extremely well in the last two games in order to have a chance at making it to the World Finals. Unfortunately for the Brazilian team, Mexico City’s Forza 2 racer, LEGITRACER, managed to get a significant lead on the competition. This resulted in Rio only managing to take second with its racer UFO-79ERN. Mexico’s other racer, mEtAlX, came in third, giving Mexico a 5-2 2in.

With the score at 15-5, Rio would need to play a virtually perfect game of Counter-Strike: Source (CS:S). This actually seemed like it might be a reality. After the first half as the terrorists, Rio led 6-3. This meant that the team would need to dominate, 9-0, in the second half to win the game outright. Rio only came in 5-4 in the second half as the counter-terrorists. Although the team won CS:S, 11-7, Mexico won the overall match 22-16.

Rio Sinistro 1 1 1 2 11 16

Dallas Venom vs. Carolina Core

Last night’s Championship Gaming Series competition would determine the champion of the North American region. After countless matches over the past month, only two franchises of the original six remained. In an upset, last year’s North American champs, the Chicago Chimera, did not make it to the play-offs. Last year’s runner-ups, the Carolina Core fared better, and despite a somewhat lackluster season managed to scrape their way into the play-offs. There, they beat 3D.NY and secured their place in the Final. They faced the Dallas Venom, who staged a dramatic comeback after its lackluster 2007 season to become one of the top teams in 2008.

The Forza 2 race opened the night. Carolina’s Phantom plowed into Dallas’s Muffinman early in the race, knocking him into fourth. He would stay in this placement for the rest of the race. Meanwhile, Dallas’s other racer Chaos held the lead, with the Core’s General E Live nipping at his heels. General E Live bided his time and finally in the third lap, pushed Chaos into a wall. General E Live took the lead and finished in first place shortly thereafter. Chaos would place second and Phantom secured one point in third. Carolina held an early 5-2 lead going into the second match. Continued…

3D.NY vs Carolina Core

Forza 2 opened Wednesday night’s North American semi-finals.  Carolina’s racer, General E Live, quickly took the lead that he would maintain for the rest of the race.  His first place finish was followed by New York’s team, ComeBackDan and Dark Storm, coming in second and third respectively.  Carolina now held a small 4-3 lead.  By comparison, the Dead or Alive 4 (DOA4) female match was much more one-sided. Mystik began the assault on New York’s Coolsvilla immediately and didn’t let up until she had won a comfortable 5-0 lead for Carolina.

As has been the pattern with FIFA 08 this season, neither player scored a goal going into the second half. However things changed dramatically from there, as Carolina’s Anomaly was the first to get on the board. WiZaKor then responded with a goal of his own.  Aomaly scored a final point, winning the match, 2-1.

With Carolina in the lead, 11-4, New York really needed their Counter-Strike: Source (CS:S) team to shine for any hope at achieving the franchise win. Unfortunately for New York, Carolina won the first half on de_inferno, 6-3.  New York came back 5-4 in the second half,  but ultimately could not win enough points to prevent Carolina’s win.

Even with a perfect 5-0 run in DOA4 male, there was no way New York could earn enough points to counter Carolina’s nine point lead.  Hypothetically if this situation were not the case, the outcome of the match may very well have placed victory in Carolina’s hands regardless.  OffbeatNinja soundly defeated New York’s Cheppelle, 5-1.  This 26-13 win is huge accomplishment for Carolina, and an equally disheartening loss for New York.  It is the second time in a row that the first place franchise has suffered defeat by a last place team.

Dallas Venom vs. Carolina Core

Yesterday’s set of franchise matches continued with the pattern of surprises that began with Sunday’s competitions.  Notably, OffbeatNinja beat Master, 5-2, in the opening Dead or Alive 4 (DOA4) male match.  OffbeatNinja’s win brings an end to Master’s undefeated second season record (now at 11-1).

Next up was a FIFA 08 match between Dallas’s Barmoa and Carolina’s Anomaly.  The score held at 0-0 until Anomaly made a goal in the second half.  Barmoa responded by again tying the game with a goal of his own.  Neither player could break this 1-1 tie.  As a result the match went to a shoot-out with Barmoa emerging victorious, 3-2.

Carolina still lead Dallas, 7-5, going into DOA4 female.  Phoenix and Mystik played out a furious battle on Gambler’s Paraside.  A few car hits and bruised knuckles later and both players were tied, 3-3.  The score remained close for the rest of the game with Phoenix eventually winning by one point, 5-4.  Her victory brought Dallas within two points of overtaking Carolina’s 11-10 lead.

Dallas absolutely dominated as counter-terrorists during the first half of Counter-Strike: Source (CS:S). As a result, the Texas team scored a decisive 8-1 victory.  However Carolina came back during its turn as the counter-terrorists and nearly matched Dallas’s score, achieving 7-2, in the second half.  Nevertheless Dallas still won the CS:S match, 10-8.

For the first time Dallas held the lead, 20-19.  However a strong showing in Forza 2 could still put Carolina over the top.  The race featured a notable number of collisions and pile-ups. Eventually Dallas’s Muffinman managed to limp into first place, followed by Carolina’s General E Live and Phantom in second and third.  This 4-3 win for Dallas led the franchise to victory with a slim 24-22 margin.

Franchise DOA4 Male DOA4 Female FIFA 08 Forza 2 CS:S Overall Record

Carolina Core 5 4 2 3 8 22 4-8

Dallas Venom vs. Chicago Chimera

A rather uneventful Forza 2 race opened Sunday’s first franchise competition. Chicago’s team of crack racers, Jason X and Ch0mpr, almost immediately sped into first and second place respectively. Dallas’s players, Muffinman and Chaos, made a few futile attempts to knock Ch0mpr out of his second place position. Ultimately they were unable stop Chicago from finishing in first and second place. These standings gave the Windy City franchise an early 6-1 lead.

Next up was a Dead or Alive 4 (DOA4) female bout between Phoenix and Kasumi Chan. Using Gen Fu, Phoenix schooled Kasumi Chan, 5-2, on the Seaside Market stage. This win allowed Dallas to close the score to within two points, 8-6. Undefeated DOA4 male powerhouse Master then pushed Dallas over the top with his 5-2 defeat of Black Mamba. Dallas was now winning, 11-10, after this pair of DOA4 victories.

With two games left, it seemed Counter-Strike: Source would be the remedy to this near deadlock. Dallas was first up as the counter-terrorists on the de_nuke stage. After the first half, Dallas led by a dramatic 7-2 margin. While the side playing counter-terrorists typically holds the advantage, this phenomenon seemingly did not apply to Chicago in the second half. As a result, Dallas won 5-3 as the terrorists. The overall CS:S score pushed Dallas to a whopping 24-15 lead. Even with the FIFA 08 game in the hopper, Dallas had effectively won the franchise match.

Despite their foreseeable loss, Chicago’s player Eafra managed to win FIFA 08, 2-0, over Dallas’s Barmoa. This win brought the overall score to 24-17 in Dallas’s favor. Chicago’s loss makes it extremely unlikely that the 2007 champs will regain their prestigious status in the second season.
