Best Buy testing used games price matching

Best Buy AdToday word got out that electronics retailer Best Buy is testing a new pricing system for videogames in select areas. According to posters displayed in participating Best Buys, “Best Buy now price matches NEW video games at USED prices from Gamestop or Game Crazy.”

New games at used prices? Sign me up. I always feel bad because, being a poor college student, I have to buy used games. I just can’t afford to drop $60 on a game. Currently there is no database listing which stores are participating, however the ever vigilant CAG community is hard at work. Hopefully this new system will go nationwide soon so I can finally do the right thing and give my money to the developers rather than the retailers.

Delightful Deals: Steet Fighter IV edition

sfiv

The summer is always a rough time for gamers. Publishers are saving up all the good releases for the fall/holiday season, leaving us nothing but shovel ware. The only good thing is that there are occasionally great deals that pop up. For example, Gamestop is selling new copies of Street Fighter IV on both the Xbox 360 and PS3 for $20.

That’s right folks, for only $20 you can be Hadoukening these hot summer days away. Personally, I love this game and cannot recommend it enough. I picked it up in Feb., and am still playing it almost every night. If anyone needs a training partner, my PSN ID is Yuenanimous.

Killzone 2 demo access with pre-order

PlayStation 3 owners everywhere are counting down the days until Killzone 2 is released on Feb. 27. Gamestop announced today that in order to get the Killzone 2 demo you have to pre-order the game. Available both in store and online, gamers just need to fork over $5 to get demo access. Those who buy it in store will get a card with a code that has access to the demo. Those who choose to pre-order it online will receive the code via email. Demo access begins on Feb 3. There are no details as to how long the demo will be or what it will feature.

What do you guys think about this? Personally I’m not a big fan of the pre-order to get the demo thing. I always felt that demos existed to help boost sales, not satiate the ravenous hunger of fan boys. Let us know what you think by leaving a comment below.

5 tips to save money on games during tough times

There is no doubt that Americans are having to stretch every cent due to  the state of the economy. While many people consider the videogame industry to be immune to economic troubles, I can assure you that this is not true for poor college gamers like me, and I assume, you. This time of the year must-have AAA titles are arriving every week, and at $60 a pop it is easy to wreck your bank account in a matter of days. This is why the good folks over at Wired.com’s Geekdad blog posted an article titled “5 Simple Ways to Stretch Your Gaming Dollar.” While some of them may seem pretty obvious, they are still valid and pertinent suggestions.

1: Stay Informed
Do some research and figure out the release dates of the games you want. Once you know when the titles you are interested in are coming out, prioritize which one(s) you must have right away. Game prices drop after a few months, so pick up the must buy game(s) and wait for the price to drop on the others.

For the rest of the tips, hit the jump.
