For those of you who don’t know, today is Bungie Day. That means that on Xbox Live, you can get themes and gamerpics free. Also free, is the new Halo 3 map Cold Storage. If haven’t picked up the Legendary Map Pack, you might want to; the price is cut to only 600 Microsoft points ($7.50). Not a bad deal to breath some new life into an old game.

If there is one thing I like about Bungie, it’s their celebrations. They are always giving away themes and gamerpics as well as cutting prices on DLC whenever a holiday rolls around. Whether it’s Cinco de Mayo or Bungie Day, you can always count on some sort of celebration.

Today some new details on Microsoft’s Halo Wars surfaced. Apparently Halo Wars‘ multiplayer will support up to six players on Xbox Live. Also, the game is said to allow two-player online co-op. On the gameplay side of things, new units were revealed, and include the Vulture, cyclops and Cobra. The current control scheme has also been detailed and you can find a chart here explaining it all.

In honor of Cinco de Mayo, the good folk over at Bungie are hosting a Halo 3 Double XP weekend. Starting today, not only will players receive double xp, but a new playlist for Fiesta called “Cinco de Mayo.” In order to play the new Fiesta playlist you need the Heroic and the Legendary map packs. The Southwestern celebration will keep the midnight tequila burning until Tuesday, so get your xp while you can.

This is just a reminder that the Halo 3 Legendary Map Pack is available for download today. Featuring three maps: “Avalanche,” “Ghost Town” and “Blackout”, the map pack will cost you 800 Microsoft Points ($10). If that seems a bit too pricey for you, you might want to take advantage of a deal going down at Circuit City. Continued…

A couple days ago, I posted a news item about the new Halo 3 map pack. Unfortunately, I was unable to verify the last map in the pack; today it was revealed that the last map in the pack will be “Blackout,” a remake of Halo 2’s “Lockout.”

Along with this announcement, Bungie also posted an interview with four of the map’s creators. It’s pretty interesting read; especially if you are interested in the map making scene.

Halo 3’s Legendary map pack comes out April 15 and will cost you 800 Microsoft Points ($10).

Today it was announced that a new Halo 3 map pack will be arriving April 15. Named the “Legendary Map Pack,” it will consist of “Avalanche,” “Ghost Town” and one other unannounced map.

“Avalanche” is the spiritual successor of Halo’s “Sidewinder.” According to Bungie, it won’t be exactly the same, but its U-shape design should feel familiar to old school gamers.

“Ghost Town” takes gamers to an old dilapidated African themed arena. According to Bungie, “Ghost Town” is well suited for One Flag, One Bomb, FFA and Team Slayer game modes.

The guys over at Bungie answered some questions about the map pack. The post can be found here. The map pack will cost you 800 Microsoft Points ($10) and will be out April 15. Drop us a comment letting us know if you are going to get it or not.

After much input from the community and game experts, WCG has unveiled the lineup for 2008. Some new faces in the lineup, while the classics sit down for another round of competition.

Warcraft III
Starcraft
Counter-Strike
(version not specified, 1.6 perhaps?)
FIFA 08
Need for Speed
Command and Conquer 3
Age of Empires 3
Carom3D
Red Stone
Project Gotham Racing
Asphalt 3
Halo 3
Guitar Hero 3
Virtua Fighter 5

Quite an interesting selection of games this time. WCG does not include Dead or Alive 4, currently used by the CGS as one of its staple games. The Guitar Hero 3 competition could be pretty intense too. Overall, the game pool looks heavier towards racing games.

After last week’s Call of Duty 4 takeover, I was ready to sound the bell and end the fight between two of the most popular shooters to ever be released on consoles.

It seems I jumped the gun. Halo 3 retook the number one spot on the Xbox LIVE list this week (measured by unique users), bumping CoD4 down to #2. My personal favorite, Gears of War, is now #5. Whether or not these numbers were directly skewed by the XBL outage is up for debate. However, the olive branch extended by MS definitely affected the results; see below.

Here are the top five:

1. Halo 3
2. Call of Duty 4
3. Guitar Hero III
4. Undertow
5. Gears of War

Curse you, free Undertow!

The M249 SAW is mightier than the plasma grenade according to Xbox 360 users. You’ve voted with your gamepads and it turns out that Call of Duty 4 is now more popular on LIVE than Halo 3.

Here are the top five Xbox 360 games by unique user according to Major Nelson’s blog:

1. Call of Duty 4
2. Halo 3
3. Guitar Hero III
4. Gears of War
5. Rock Band

Perhaps the real surprise is the longevity of Gears of War. I really loved that game and I’m glad it’s still in the top five most played games on LIVE, over a year after its release. That sort of staying power is rare in the console scene, in my opinion.

Maybe Gears will give birth to the next bitterly hardcore e-sports community? Having played extensively, I think it’s a tactical enough game for it to happen.

Only two teams are left standing in GGL’s Halo 3 Celebration bracket following last week’s 8-team battle royale.

Silent Vendetta and Rookie Rippon will face off Jan. 14 to decide the winner of this exciting tournament. Their paths through the bracket after the round of eight looked like this:

Silent Vendetta beat 5 6 Acez, while Raincoat took down Gravija, setting up a Silent Vendetta/Raincoat showdown. While SV took the match 2-1, it was extremely close; they only won Snowbound, the third map, 25-22.

On the other side of the bracket, Rookie Rippon battled Just Those XBL kids and moved on to fight Blollywood. The match ended with a nailbiter on Snowbound, with Rookie Rippon winning 25-24 (for a 2-1 victory).
