The latest issue of GamePro has news about Microsoft closing a deal to acquire Gears of War developer Epic Games; allegedly, the deal could cost as much as as $1 billion dollars.

Hold on, let me get my giant mound of salt. Okay.

If this turns out to be true, Microsoft would own the much hyped and Epic-developed Unreal Engine 3, used in the already mentioned Gears of War and Unreal Tournament 3.

Right now, this is just a rumor due to many reasons, obviously, and the price is only one of them. DevelopMag has Internet quote machine (and Epic VP) Mark Rein saying that the billion dollar rumor is only half of what Epic is really worth. Continued…

Speculation in the online game space is the most dangerous thing this side of wall hackers and no game is safe from its evil grasp. Such is the case in the latest little bit of controversy surrounding Unreal Tournament 3 and remarks made by Epic VP Mark Rein when speaking on Epic’s forums about when the game is specifically coming out — all we knew is that it was coming out in November.

We were there, we played the game (and will bring you a write-up on it tomorrow), but for now the video will have to be enough:

Epic VP Mark Rein says that the Xbox 360’s DVDs are cramping Unreal Tournament 3’s style as compared to the Blu-ray PlayStation 3 version.

“We’ll compress some things. But you know, we may have fewer maps on the 360 version … Blu-ray has definitely given us a lot of legroom,” said Rein at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival. Continued…
