Continued from Part 1.

Vanguard sticks out as one of the biggest failures in MMORPG history. The game was praised as the hardcore player’s wet dream; promising as it was, the publisher made a crucial mistake by releasing the game before it was finished. The coding was largely incomplete, and the game required extensive polishing.

Without proper coding or optimization, the players who played Vanguard felt they had been sold an unfinished product. This lead many players to cancel their subscriptions and move on to another game. Furthermore, the developers were forced to spend their time fixing coding issues after the game was released.

Players left the game in droves, and Vanguard would become just another failed MMO.Vanguard 595

Hellgate: London had many of the same problems. Many players had the feeling that the game was unfinished when released and the developers should have been given more time. Even now, Hellgate: London players feel that the developers are still working to finish their game. Continued…

Destination Games and NCSoft announced today that the upcoming MMORPG Tabula Rasa is gold and will land on store shelves Oct. 19.

The game follows humanity’s quest as they attempt to rebuild civilization after catastrophic losses at the hands of the alien Bane.

Richard “Lord British” Garriott, executive producer of Tabula Rasa, said: It has been a heck of a journey. The fact that we are getting ready for the final stretch towards launch feels great, but it is also just the beginning.” Continued…

Three new videos of NCsoft’s Tabula Rasa, narrated by Richard Garriott, were released today. The videos showcase some of the novel gameplay mechanics of the upcoming MMORPG, including the little tidbit that combat actually takes some skill and planning. In Tabula Rasa, you don’t stand toe to toe with enemies and pound on them, but instead, actively participate in the combat by dodging, strafing, and picking good spots to shoot from.

If you haven’t been keeping track of this game, you owe it to yourself to watch these videos. GGL’s Robert Summa will be at the LOGOS Academy tomorrow getting a better look at Tabula Rasa, so stay tuned for more information on the game.

In an interview about NCSoft’s publishing deal with Sony, NCSoft CEO Geoff Heath dropped this little gem: “I think there is a difference between PC and console players but there’s overlap as well. Our view long term is that people who have traditionally only played on PC will actually now start transitioning to PS3.”

We’ll find out if he’s right in due time, but native mouse and keyboard support will go a long way toward alleviating the concerns that PC gamers have with consoles.

Despite the growing market for MMOs on the consoles, NCSoft will continue developing for the PC. Guild Wars is doing well, with over 3 million copies sold, and more expansions are on the way. Continued…

One of the main titles presented by NCSoft at Games Convention 2007 was the MMORPG Tabula Rasa, set in a futuristic world where our world was invaded by aliens and humanity is fighting for survival. If you are a MMO fan, check out the game preview that Wire got to see is this one would match your fancy.

NCsoft has sent word that Guild Wars: Eye of the North will have a special sneak peek weekend in honor of the Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle this weekend. The event will begin on Friday. Check out the details after the jump.

NCsoft announced today that the Guild Wars series has sold over four million copies in over two years.

In an MMO world dominated by World of Warcraft, that’s pretty impressive. Unfortunately, this doesn’t speak to the number of active players in the game, but whatever that number is, it will undoubtedly get a boost when the first true expansion is released at the end of this month.

Guild Wars: Eye of the North lets players explore the frozen areas of the Far Shiverpeaks. A preview event will start Aug. 26 for those who pre-order the GW: Eye of the North bonus pack.

Listen up, soldiers! The Bane have destroyed human civilization and General Richard Garriott wants you … to buy the Tabula Rasa Limited Edition.

LE packs seem to be all the rage lately, and this one includes such goodies as a special character emote, dye recipes (for armor), a special pet, and a briefing from General Garriott himself. Additionally, you’ll receieve hardcopy maps, some Tabula Rasa dog tags (definitely not inscribed with your info should you die in space), and a poster.

Perhaps most importantly, Tabula Rasa LE includes a free month of game time and a “Making of Tabula Rasa” DVD. Price details have not yet been announced.

I can’t think of one quest in World of Warcraft where I had a say in how to finish it. It’s either “turn in 50 scorpion parts” or “don’t do the quest.” Luckily for me, Tabula Rasa will allow players to finish quests in multiple ways, with far-reaching outcomes.

Another mission of note is for players with levels in the mid-teens. As you progress though the game and are redeployed to Foreas Base, you’re told that the AFS has a Bane prisoner who is currently undergoing interrogation. This will start a chain of missions as the Bane prisoner reveals more and more information, allowing you to attack the local Bane base, kill a key Bane soldier, deal with some traitors, and possibly even defend the prison from attack.

At the end of this mission chain, you’re now left with the choice of what to do with the prisoner. On one hand, he’s one of the evil Bane, who wiped out most of humanity and forced people like yourself to fight for survival on a few scattered alien worlds. It doesn’t deserve to live… or does it? As a mere soldier, the Bane was just doing what it was supposed to do, no more and no less, and cannot really be held responsible for what the leadership of the Bane did to Earth. Continued…
