After a six-month hiatus, the Championship Gaming Series (CGS) is back for its second season. The 2008 North American competition began today at Electronic Arts’ headquarters in Los Angeles. As with the 2007 season, six franchises will compete against one another in four video games. The two finalist franchises at the end of the two-week competition win the chance to continue to the World Finals.

There are a few changes to the games lineup this season. CGS fans will be glad to hear that fan favorites Counter-Strike: Source and Dead or Alive 4 both return. The popular soccer game FIFA has been upgraded to this year’s version, FIFA 08. Perhaps the biggest change is the choice to replace last year’s racing game, Project Gotham Racing 3, with the more simulation-oriented Forza 2.

Three matches took place tonight. As with last season, the CGS divides each match into five rounds relative to the four featured games (there are five rounds because male and female DOA 4 players fight seperately). Each team has ten members: five Counter-Strike players, two DOA 4 players (one male, one female), two Forza 2 players, and one FIFA 08 player. Both the Counter-Strike and Forza 2 players act as a team to achieve victory.

Chicago Chimera vs. Carolina Core

First up was a re-match between rival franchises the Chicago Chimera and Carolina Core. This rivalry is no doubt due to the fact that Chimera won both the North American and Worldwide championships over the Core in 2007. Fans will remember that the outcome of both matches depened upon the results of the Project Gotham Racing 3 competitions. Ironically enough, Forza 2 was the opening game of 2008 season. Unfortunately for the Chimera, their star players Ch0mpr and Jason-X were almost immediately knocked out by Core players GeneralELive and Phantom. The Chimera could not recover from this start and lost the race, 6-1. Continued…

Where I live there are no arcades, so what is a guy supposed to do if he wants to relive his childhood?

He goes the way of emulation! I decided to pull out the Dreamcast and take a trip down memory lane with one of the first games I ever played: Shinobi.

I fired it up, dropped in some virtual quarters and shazam! I was eight years old again. I also realized something else. After twenty years of playing video games, I still suck at the bonus game.

Damn you, non-animated generic ninja! I had finished this game before on the Sega Master System (yes, I was one of a dozen people to own it), so that helped me finish it once again.

There are a lot of patterns, so playing through the same areas a few times helps to figure out where to jump and when to attack. Kind of like Ninja Gaiden for the NES. Now, continuing in the game at home isn’t the same as the arcade. I dropped like ten (fake) bucks in a couple of hours.

I sure as hell wouldn’t have done that when I was a little kid, because my mom never gave me that much for the arcade. Regardless, I grew up to be a lifelong gamer.

That’s all for this week, but are there any suggestions for next Thursday night? Is there a beloved game you want me to check and see if it stood the test of time? Make a suggestion and I will try to get my hands on it one way or another.

Along with news of Ninja Gaiden 2’s release date comes a new trailer and a handful of screenshots. Check the 60fps decapitating action below.

Announced today at GDC, Ninja Gaiden II will be coming out in the U.S. on June 3rd. Fortunately for me, that’s my birthday, so I guess I know what I’ll be asking for.

Ninja Gaiden II will be an Xbox 360 exclusive and will feature numerous improvements over its original Xbox predecessor. Some of which include improved graphics, a new health system, new weapons, and a 30 hour story mode.

Unfortunately for my grades, my college is on quarters, making finals around the start of June. I hate to reinforce the stereotype of the lazy gamer, but hey, I am what I am.

The past couple weeks I caught myself thinking: “It’s been a while since Microsoft has put any original Xbox titles on Xbox Live Marketplace.”

Apparently the guys at Microsoft thought that too, which is why today they announced three more titles that will be available for download next week. Ninja Gaiden Black, Sid Meier’s Pirates! and Black will all arrive Feb. 11. They will cost you 1200 Microsoft Points, which equates to $15.00.

I love Sid Meier’s Pirates! and Ninja Gaiden Black. I think they are two of the best Xbox titles, and you can be sure that I will be clearing room off my hard drive to make room for these titles.
