Sony announced today that the PlayStation Home beta is expanding its U.S. user base. In order to apply, PlayStation 3 owners must check out the PlayStation Store later tonight. A new PlayStation Home theme will be released. All you have to do is download the theme and bingo, you applied.

If you live in Europe and want to get into the Home beta, Sony has good news for you. They will be adding new users by selecting people who are the most active on the PlayStation Network. So if you want in, start playing online more.

Today, a level pack for the Xbox Live Arcade game N+ was released. Costing only 200 Microsoft Points ($2.50), players will be treated to 200 new levels. 150 of these are “easier” singleplayer levels, while the other 50 are “pretty hard” and are designed for co-op.

This is the kind of DLC I like to see, cheap and full of content. Hopefully it will sell well and other developers will see the merit in low cost DLC.

A new demo of Frontlines: Fuel of War (PC) just got released today, letting gamers sample the glory of a dynamic battlefield online.

The demo includes the maps Oilfield and GNAW and weighs in at 1.81GB.

In case you were living under a rock for the last few years, Frontlines: Fuel of War is developed by Kaos Studios, the makers of the Desert Combat mod for Battlefield 1942. They went on to develop Battlefield 2 with DICE, then worked on Frontlines for THQ.

Hit Fileplanet for the demo.

I just got a chance to speak with European PC FIFA ladder leader dragua, who I had never encountered before. Not being a huge FIFA aficionado (comes with the territory of being a fat, ignorant American), I was curious to know his history and motivations in the Digital Games tournament. Without further ado, here’s the interview!

GGL: Please state your real name, age, and occupation.

My name is Artem Dragunov. I am 22. I am from Latvia. I study in the Riga Technical University on the Faculty of Electronics and Telecommunations and I work in an insurance company as a database-support operator.

GGL: What attracted you to play in the Digital Games tournament?

I decided to take part in the Digital Games, because it was quite interesting for me to represent my country among the FIFA-players from all over the world in a competition, which is a part of the Olympic Games in China.

GGL: Why FIFA? Are you a huge futbol fan, did you grow up playing it?

Yes, you are right. I like football very much. I was playing football at the professional level for 5 years. Unfortunatelly, I had to give up football because of the intensive studies, but I always play football with my friends in my free time, so it is an essential part of my life. And FIFA is almost the only game I play. Continued…

Today the Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix Beta, on Xbox Live Arcade began. In order to get into the beta, gamers must purchase Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 on Xbox Live Arcade. From the main menu of Commando 3, there should be a option that says “SFII HD Remix Beta.” Once you select that, you will be taken to a blade that asks for confirmation of download. Agree to that and the SFII HD Beta is yours.

What’s in the beta? Well, unfortunately, not much. Players will have the option (or lack thereof) to play as Ryu or Ken. The lack of choice is OK though, the reason for the beta is to stress test the net code for multiplayer. We all know that the reason you decided to participate in the beta was to help out Capcom, not get early access to a highly anticipated game.

Right?

A few months ago I posted a new item about Fallen Empire: Legions, a browser based FPS made by the good folks at GarageGames. Today it was announced that Fallen Empire has entered the open beta phase. To join in on the action, head over to InstantAction.com and sign up for an account. It is free of charge and only takes a few minutes.

The beta includes two different classes, two maps, and two gameplay modes, deathmatch and capture the flag. It is a free game that a lot of good people put hard work into. You should give it a try. What have you got to lose? It’s free!

We may be dangerously close to Street Fighter IV media overload, but there’s no denying that the game looks awesome. Check out this trailer of the game featuring in-game footage spliced with animated/CGI promos.

id Software has just announced that it’s making Doom 4. While details are scant, it’s not a stretch to assume that the game is in production for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

“Doom is part of the id Software DNA and demands the greatest talent and brightest minds in the industry to bring the next installment of our flagship franchise to Earth,” said id CEO Todd Hollenshead.

The announcement comes in time for QuakeCon, which will be held July 31.

In addition to Doom 4, id is also working on the original IP Rage (a post-apocalyptic adventure) and the multiplayer-only Quake LIVE.

Remember when I posted a news item about the Premium Edition of Soul Calibur IV? I promised to revisit it if any new information came out, and today Namco explained in further detail the Premium Edition’s contents.

The Premium Edition comes with a XL T-shirt. The Xbox 360 version’s shirt is white and has Yoda on it. The PS3 version’s is black and has Darth Vader on it. There is also the mysterious “Tournament Kit”, which in all reality is just a card with a tournament tree on it. Also included, is a comic/art book which will explain the events that happened before Soul Calibur IV.

I’ll leave it up to you guys to decide if its worth the $80 price tag. Personally, I think I’ll pass.

Today PS3 gamers were let down by Sony when they announced that the Home Closed Beta will be extended to Summer 2008. Originally slated for Fall 07, Home was pushed back to Spring 08. Now gamers can only hope that Summer 08 bears some fruit.

According to Sony: “We understand that we are asking PS3 and prospective PS3 users to wait a bit longer, but we have come to the conclusion that we need more time to refine the service to ensure a more focused gaming entertainment experience than what it is today. Our overarching objective is to provide users with new gaming experiences that are available only on PLAYSTATION Home. Spending more time on the development and on the Closed Beta testing reaffirms our commitment to bringing a quality service, maintaining the PlayStation tradition.”

Let’s hope that this is the last delay.
