This week’s Release Roundup beings up one of the most anticipated games of the summer. Of course I’m talking about Ghostbusters: The Video Game.
The game takes place during Thanksgiving of 1991, two years after Ghostbusters II. Due to a rise in paranormal activity, the four classic characters (Ray, Egon, Peter, and Winston) need a little help, so they hire a fifth man. This is where the player steps in.
If the plot sounds a little suspect, don’t fret. Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis (writers/stars of the first two movies) penned the script. Aykroyd has referred to the game as being essentially Ghostbusters 3. If Ramis and Aykroyd taking control of the script isn’t enough for you, you should rest assured that most of the movie’s characters are returning with their original actors voicing them. The only notable two actors that declined to be involved in the gamer are Rick Moranis (Louis Tully) and Sigourney Weaver (Dana Barrett).
This week’s Release Roundup brings us a title wave of games to drown our time in. In total, 46 games are coming out this week. While all of them may not appeal to the hardcore demographic, I’m looking at you Pony Paradise, I feel that there is a game in here for everyone.
Strategy fans will love this week’s Release Roundup. The two biggest titles both fall under the RTS genre.
On the Xbox 360 we have Halo Wars, which takes the mythos and weapons from the Halo franchise and puts them into a RTS shell. This is a pretty important game. It will be the first modern first party RTS on a console. If it succeeds, one of the biggest arguments against console gaming (lack of mouse for RTS games) will be thrown out the window.
On the PC we have Empire Total War, which takes the classic Total War system out of the medieval era and into age of colonialism. I have always been a big fan of the Total War series. The way the they blends turn based strategy with real time combat makes a perfect combination of strategy and action. I would definitely give this game a try.
Guitar Hero: Metallica allows gamers to rock out on a guitar, bass, microphone and drums. The drums will feature an Expert+ difficulty setting that takes advantage of double bass pedals.
Heavy metal fans as well as gamers are waiting with bated breath for any announcement regarding Guitar Hero: Metallica. Well today Metallica posted an official date on their website. According to the band, the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of Guitar Hero: Metallica will hit North American stores on March 29. The Wii and PS2 version will hit sometime in the spring, “most likely in early May.”

Today Activision released the first trailer for the upcoming Guitar Hero: Metallica. Containing about 45 songs, 60% of which are Metallica titles, Guitar Hero: Metallica follows the same formula set by its Aerosmith predecessor of including songs from similar artists. Rumor has it that GH: Metallica will feature a new drum difficulty that will allow for double bass pedals. If this rumor pans out, I can finally live out my power metal fantasies.
Guitar Hero: Metallica is set to arrive sometime in 09 and is expected to hit Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, and Wii.

This week is an especially slow week for games. Come Tuesday, there will be only one game coming out for the Xbox 360 and the PS3, Rise of the Argonauts. I really wish that developers and publishers would realize that it’s kinda dumb to release all the triple-A titles in Oct. and Nov. It’s around those times that poor college students like myself are having to cut back on spending so that we can afford to go shopping for the holidays. I have a firm believe that a more staggered release schedule would not only benefit gamers, but publishers and developers as well.
You see, by having all the anticipated titles coming out in the fall, gamers are forced into deciding which game they need to have first. This leaves a large majority of titles that would have had better sales had they come out in the slower parts of the year. This would mean that gamers have more variety of games as the year goes on, as well as ensuring that developers and publishers sell more games.
Enough with my theories on game sales and economics. The games coming out this week are:
Xbox 360:
Rise of the Argonauts

As the entire holiday deluge is well-behind us, it’s slim pickings for releases this week. Heading into Christmas, you’ll find that there’s less stuff hitting shelves as much as it is piling on top of them.
One high-profile PC port and the extension of the Sonic series come out this week. Let’s get started on the rundown!
PC
The new Prince of Persia game comes this week to Windows thanks to the wizards at Ubisoft. The new-look, edgy prince and his scantily-dressed companion Elika take on the hordes of Ahirman, the god of destruction, and attempt to stop him from destroying the world. Or something.
In case you’ve been under a rock, this isn’t your father’s Prince of Persia. He combines parkour-like moves such as wall running (an apparent staple of Ubisoft games) with a scarred appearance and trendy haircut, and wields a claw gauntlet on his left hand. GameTrailers has a review up of the console version that you can watch below–see if it’s more to your liking than the 80s version.
This is a relatively slow week for game releases. The only major title arriving is Prince of Persia. Sure there is GTA IV on PC, but I’m pretty sure that by now everyone has played it. Don’t get me wrong, I wholeheartedly plan on picking up GTA IV on the PC, just later down the line when I have some spare cash and finals aren’t creeping up on me. Anyway, Prince of Persia hits PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 this Tuesday, and from what reviews I’ve seen, it seems to be doing pretty well. If you plan on picking it up, drop a comment below letting us know what you think.
Here are the gaming coming out this week.
Xbox 360:
* Prince of Persia
* Destroy All Humans! Path Of The Furon
* The Tale of Despereaux
This week marks the end of the triple-A holiday game flood. You can now rest easy and finally make you way though all of Fallout 3 or get in some good multiplayer action with Left 4 Dead. There might be the occasional good game drifting in over the next couple weeks, but it is safe to say the main blockbuster rush is over. The only really exciting game coming out this week is one we all have played more than ten years ago. Yup, that’s right, Chrono Trigger finally hits the Nintendo DS this week. So sit back, relax, grab some turkey and spend your holiday week making though all the triple-A titles you stockpiled.
The new games this week are:
Xbox 360:
* Sonic Unleashed
* Winter Sports 2 The Ultimate Challenge
* NPPL Championship Paintball 2009

This weeks “Release Roundup” showcases one of the most anticipated titles this year, Left 4 Dead. There’s something so pure and enjoyable about four player co-op and fending off hordes of the undead. Just this past weekend, I spent hours playing the L4D demo with my brother, and let me tell you, I’m hard-pressed to think of a time when I had more fun. If you guys haven’t tried it yet, you still have a few hours until Valve takes the demo down. So that you guys have more time to spend slaying zombies, I’ll just list the new games this week.
Xbox 360:
* Left 4 Dead
* The Last Remnant
* Shaun White Snowboarding
* Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe
* You’re in the Movies with Camera
* Tomb Raider Underworld
* NPPL Championship Paintball 2009

* Disney’s Bolt
* Sonic Unleashed
