Today it was announced that the ending song from Portal, “Still Alive,” will hit the Rock Band store tomorrow for both Xbox 360 and PS3. The best part is, that the song is free.

Greg LoPiccolo, Harmonix’s VP of product development said: “While the cake may be a lie, the free download of ‘Still Alive’ is confirmed truth. ‘Still Alive’ is an awesome song that brings together great gaming and great music. We’ve teamed up with Valve to deliver a free download of ‘Still Alive’ as a thank you to our fans for their incredible support.”

Now I have to think of a way to coax my non-gamer friends into playing such a nerdy song. Then again, I already have them playing Rock Band, which is kind of nerdy.

The other night at Valve’s GDC party, they made a surprising announcement: The ending song from Portal, “Still Alive,” will be available to play in Rock Band.

Jonathan Coulton, writer of the song, said: “That is when we jumped on-stage and pulled out our Rock Band equipment piece by piece…When they got to the song list they scrolled through an almost infinite amount of DLC until eventually they stopped on one- ‘Still Alive’ by GLaDOS.”

Unfortunately there are no details as to how much it will cost or when the song will be released. Regardless, I still think that this was a triumph.

There’s no question that the star of Valve’s Orange Box was Portal, for me at least. That’s why I’m sure that it comes as no surprise that Valve is planning more Portal content.

As to what this content is, I am not sure. However Doug Lombardi, Valve’s marketing director, said: “There’ll be more Portal, for sure. But the details of that, to be honest, we’re still working out.”

Personally, I would prefer a Portal 2 rather than just more puzzles. I’m tching to know more about our hero and what happened to GLaDOS. Hopefully this time around, the cake won’t be a lie…

The 2007/2008 winter must be the season of giving. First EA Games hooks us up with a free game due to the Rock Band guitar issue. Then Microsoft promises us a free XBLA game due to the Live downtime. Now NVIDIA has teamed up with Valve software to give us an extended Portal demo.

Portal: First Slice is a demo which consists of the first third of the full Portal. How do you get it? Well if you are rocking a NVIDIA graphics card, hop on to Steam and allow it to run some auto detection software. Then the extended demo should be yours. Continued…

The National Public Radio is often scoffed at by the gamer generation. It lacks that flashiness that so ofter captures our attention. Well NPR recently aired a story entitled “Video Games that Got Away,” on it’s All Things Considered program. The description reads:

“As part of a week-long NPR series exploring ‘the ones that got away,’ Heather Chaplin reports on three video games released in 2007 that didn’t get as much attention as they may have deserved: Portal, Everyday Shooter, and Desktop Tower Defender.”

I gave it a listen and it turned out to be a really interesting piece. If you have a few minutes, give it a listen at Video Games that Got Away.

Gordon Freeman says “You’re deactivated, bitch!”Persons who purchased the The Orange Box from an online Thai retailer at a discount are having their games “deactivated” by Valve.

The Thai version of the game collection was intended only for domestic consumption; but the retailer sold the product to international customers for $20.

Valve is now deactivating the product on Steam for anyone who has a Thai CD key, but is not in Thailand. The company is directing these customers to the original retailer for a refund. Continued…
