Release Roundup: June 14

256px-ghostbusters_videogame_frontThis week’s Release Roundup beings up one of the most anticipated games of the summer. Of course I’m talking about Ghostbusters: The Video Game.

The game takes place during Thanksgiving of 1991, two years after Ghostbusters II. Due to a rise in paranormal activity, the four classic characters (Ray, Egon, Peter, and Winston) need a little help, so they hire a fifth man. This is where the player steps in.

If the plot sounds a little suspect, don’t fret. Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis (writers/stars of the first two movies) penned the script. Aykroyd has referred to the game as being essentially Ghostbusters 3. If Ramis and Aykroyd taking control of the script isn’t enough for you, you should rest assured that most of the movie’s characters are returning with their original actors voicing them. The only notable two actors that declined to be involved in the gamer are Rick Moranis (Louis Tully) and Sigourney Weaver (Dana Barrett).

new-xbox-360-prototype-screens-20070926111114696_640wThis week marks the release of the much-hyped open-world action-adventure Prototype (did I use enough hyphens?) and Tiger Woods 10 for people who are too poor to play real golf.

It’s a great time to mutate into a walking weapon as Alex Mercer in Prototype, but the rest of the list is looking a bit dry. Here it is:

PS2

Indiana Jones and the Staff of Kings

Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10

Ps3

Release Roundup: May 31.

sims3cover-artThis week’s Release Roundup is looking pretty sparse for hardcore gamers. The title coming out this week with the most buzz surrounding it is The Sims 3.

While The Sims may not be a hardcore game, you can’t deny its popularity. The Sims titles have consistently been in the top 10 PC sales charts since it came out. The Sims 3 adds seamless transitions between houses and neighborhoods, encouraging players to explore the Sims world. Also developer EA Play has done away with the comfort and environment requirements your sims has, leaving hunger, bladder, energy, social, hygiene and fun to be fulfilled.

The new games this week are:

Xbox 360

252px-infamous-coverThis week’s Release Roundup gives gamers the chance to get in touch with their superhero/villain side. This is because the super powered sandbox PS3 exclusive inFamous hits stores Tuesday.

Developed by Sucker Punch Productions, inFamous puts players in control of Cole, a bike messenger who through a crazy course of events develops electricity-based super powers. The cool thing about inFamous is that gamers get to choose whether to use Cole’s new found powers for good or for evil.

As if super powers weren’t enough to get your attention, Sony is running a promotion very similar to Microsoft’s early access to the Halo 3 beta.  Gamers who buy early copies inFamous will get access to the Uncharted 2: Among Thieves beta, which starts on June 3.

The games coming out this week are:

Xbox 360

  • Fallout 3 Game Add-On Pack - The Pitt and Operation Anchorage

bionic_commandoThis week’s two big titles might make you think fondly of your childhood. That’s because both games were NES franchises.

Bionic Commando is a direct sequel to the 1988 NES game with the same title. Gamers take control of Spencer, a commando with a bionic arm (go figure). The robotic appendage allows Spencer to swing around environment like Spider-Man. Spencer’s arm also allows him to toss massive debris, such as boulders and cars, at his enemies.  Bionic Commando is arrive on the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.

The other major title this week is Punch-Out!! for the Wii. As with the previous Punch-Out!! titles, players will take control of Little Mac as he works his way up the boxing ladder. Punch-Out!! can be played with just the Wii Remote using the original NES controls, or players can also use the Nunchuk in tandem with the Wii Balance Board for a more interactive experience.

The games coming out this week are:

Xbox 360

  • Bionic Commando
  • Rock Band Track Pack: Classic Rock
  • Terminator Salvation - The Videogame

battlestations_pacificThis week’s Release Roundup has something for everyone.

For shooter fans, Killing Floor hits Steam this week. Killing Floor is a co-operative FPS that plays like Left 4 Dead mixed with CoD:WaW’s Nazi Zombies mode. Developed by veteran indie developer  Tripwire Interactive (Red Orchestra: Ostfront 41-45), Killing Floor promises hours of gory fun.

If WWII sims are you thing, you might want to check out Battlestations: Pacific. Developed by Eidos, Pacific expands on Battlestations: Midway by adding new weapons, vehicles, and combat options.

If hack and slash RPGs sound good to you, Sacred 2: Fallen Angel hits consoles this week. Sacred 2 plays like your typical Diablo clone, with players choosing a class, exploring dungeons, and leveling up. I’ve played a little Sacred 2 on PC and I must say, I was impressed. The game may not have the most innovative of game mechanics, but they are implemented well.

The games coming out this week are:

Xbox 360

  • Battlestations: Pacific
  • Raiden Fighters Aces
  • Sacred 2: Fallen Angel Read more »

250px-dynasty_warriors_gundam_2_coverThis week’s Release Roundup is a bit sparse. There pretty much is only one new game per platform, but that’s okay. The free Left 4 Dead DLC hits this Tuesday, April 21.

On the PC there is the downloadable title Zeno Clash, a FPS/fighting game from Chile. Zeno Clash was a finalist in this years Independent Games Festival. It is set in a unique punk fantasy world where there is a strong focus on melee combat. According to ACE Team, the developer, Zeno clash is “like Dark Messiah meets Double Dragon.” Zeno Clash is being published on Steam and Direct2Drive.

On the console side, Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 2 is arriving on PS3, Xbox 360 and PS2. Gundam 2 features enhanced enemy AI, a more in depth story mode, more mobile suits, and colossal mobile armors.

Here are the new games this week.

Xbox 360

Release Roundup: April 12

demigod_coverWhile there are no new Xbox 360 or PS3 games this week, there is Demigod on the PC.

Some of you might be asking, “What’s Demigod?” For those of you who don’t know, Demigod takes the basic structure of the breakout Warcraft III mod Defense of the Ancients and attempts to distill it to perfection. Players can choose one of 8 demigods, each with their own unique play style and abilities, and throw them into an epic battle where they must turn the tides.

While there are currently eight demigods to choose from, Gas Powered Games has stated that it plans on releasing additional demigods as downloadable content.

I have always been a fan of DotA, but felt that because it is built in Warcraft III it can be optimized. Demigod takes DotA to the next level with great graphics and optimized gameplay. I can’t wait to give Demigod a try when it comes out.

The games coming out this week are:

PC

  • City of Heroes: Architect Edition
  • Cryostasis: The Sleep of Reason
  • Demigod

255px-godfather2gamecoverThis week gamers have plenty of options in terms of new games. While all of the new games may not be triple-A blockbusters, I’m sure there is plenty of fun to be had.

If sandbox crime is your thing, you might want to check out The Godfather II. GFII takes most of the gameplay elements from the first Godfather and expands on them. One new feature, dubbed “The Don’s View,” allows you to view your criminal empire on a map and strategically manage all your nefarious deeds.

If you are more of a FPS sci-fi fan, The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena is also coming out. Dark Athena is a direct sequel to Escape from butcher bay. If you have never played the first game, don’t fret. It has been remade and is included on the Dark Athena disk.

The games coming out this are:

Xbox 360

  • Hannah Montana: The Movie
  • Ninja Blade
  • The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena
  • The Godfather 2 Read more »

Release Roundup: March 29

guitar_hero_metallicaThis week’s Release Roundup is for all the metal heads out there. Why the bizarre dedication? Because Guitar Hero Metallica came out March 29.

For those of you who don’t know, Guitar Hero Metallica takes the formula from Guitar Hero World tour and gives it a metal makeover. As the title suggests, a large portion of the tracks are Metallica songs, however there are other bands like Samhain, Slayer, Judas Priest and Motörhead. Due the to nature of the tracks (fast and elaborate), the game is considerably harder than previous Guitar Hero titles. There is even an Expert+ difficulty level for drummers which allows the use of a second bass pedal, giving those righteous riffs a faster back beat.

The games coming out this week are:

Xbox 360

  • Guitar Hero: Metallica
  • Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust
  • Ski-Doo Snowmobile Challenge Read more »
