Today Activision revealed the ‘Renegade Edition’ of the upcoming rhythm game DJ Hero.
Featuring a special black and gold turntable/cross-fader, the ‘Renegade Edition’ packs a hardshell carrying case and 2 CDs of unreleased tracks by Eminem and Jay-Z.
Slated to arrive on Oct. 27 on the Xbox 360, PS3, PS2 and Wii, DJ Hero will retail for $120. Activision has yet to mention a price for the ‘Renegade Edition.’

Today Microsoft announced that the wireless microphone, originally designed for and packaged with the karaoke game Lips, will be sold individually this fall.
With games like Guitar Hero: Metallica and Rock Band 2 recently adding support for Microsoft’s wireless mic, marketing the standalone mic is an obvious cash crop. Also, the fact that the mic will be hitting stores around the same time as Lips: Number One Hits and The Beatles: Rock Band, both offering support for the mic, doesn’t hurt.
The only downside is the price. Microsoft stated that the mic will cost $50, the same price as the current Lips bundle.
Personally, I love these wireless mics. Whenever I have a Rock Band party, I ask my friend to bring over his mic. It’s just so much easier than having to deal with the chords knocking over drinks on my coffee table.

Yesterday Neversoft announced that Guitar Hero 5 will hit stores on Sept. 1.
Like GHWT, GH5 will allow gamers to play the guitar, bass, drums, and sing. In addition, it will also allow the use of four of the same instruments at the same time. That means no more arguing over who get stuck with bass duty.
GH5 will include songs from 85 bands. For the list of songs and bands we know, hit the jump. Read more »
Today Activision announced four new rhythm games arriving this fall, including DJ Hero, Guitar Hero 5, Band Hero, and Guitar Hero Van Halen.
As the name implies, DJ Hero puts gamers behind a turntable controller allowing them to mix and cut hip-hop, R&B, electronica, and Motown.
Guitar Hero 5 takes the formula from World Tour and adds drop-in drop-out gameplay and the ability to change instruments/difficulty levels on the fly.
Band Hero is a more family friendly version of the Guitar Hero games. It will have an ESRB rating of E10+ and will have a track list made up of family friendly Top-40 hits.
Guitar Hero Van Halen will arrive in “the second half of this year.” Aside from the obvious Van Halen tracks, artists such as Weezer, Queen, Blink 182, Queens of the Stone Age, and The Offspring will be lending songs from their catalogs.
Unfortunately Activision didn’t mention what platforms any of these game will arrive on, however I feel safe in assuming that the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, and PS2 will get some rocking love.

Today Sony announced that the PSP’s rhythmic war game Patapon 2 will only be available as a download in North America.
When the game arrives on May 5, you can purchase a voucher from retail stores for $20. All you have to do is enter the code into the PlayStation Store and the game is yours. If you are like me, and prefer to save money and minimize human interaction, you could just pick up the title from the PS Store for $15.
Patrick Seybold, Sony Computer Entertainment America’s corporate communications director, stated: “We’re considering a digital only format for the Patapon 2 release as a one time test case as we continue to explore consumer preferences for digital content.”
Hopefully this will work out for Sony. Patapon was a great game, and I expect the second one will follow suit. It would be a shame if the download only format didn’t work out for this game.

This week’s Release Roundup is for all the metal heads out there. Why the bizarre dedication? Because Guitar Hero Metallica came out March 29.
For those of you who don’t know, Guitar Hero Metallica takes the formula from Guitar Hero World tour and gives it a metal makeover. As the title suggests, a large portion of the tracks are Metallica songs, however there are other bands like Samhain, Slayer, Judas Priest and Motörhead. Due the to nature of the tracks (fast and elaborate), the game is considerably harder than previous Guitar Hero titles. There is even an Expert+ difficulty level for drummers which allows the use of a second bass pedal, giving those righteous riffs a faster back beat.
The games coming out this week are:
Xbox 360
- Guitar Hero: Metallica
- Leisure Suit Larry: Box Office Bust
- Ski-Doo Snowmobile Challenge Read more »
Today Activision confirmed that the long-rumored DJ Hero will arrive in stores later this year. Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision, stated: “We have this product called DJ Hero coming out later this year, which is a turntable that you actually can play competitively and spin discs and mix songs,” during a CNBC interview.
The DJ Hero controller is suppose to be a turntable with three rhythm buttons and a cross-fader.
As someone who owns turntables and loves the art of mixing and scratching, I am both excited and appalled by this game. I am excited because it will get gamers interested in turntablism and I’m sure down the line we will have some great artists. On the other hand, I am appalled because DJing won’t nearly be as easy as the game will make it seem and there will be plenty of kids who waste tons of money on turntables, needles, records, etc. You have to have an ear for beats and an ability to keep count on several things at once. I guess it is like when real guitar players look at guitar hero.

As of today, there are two free Bruce Springsteen tracks for Guitar Hero World Tour; the classic “Born to Run” and his new single “My Lucky Day”. The tracks are currently available on Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii owners can expect to see them sometime later this week.
If you want these tracks, and trust me you do, you better download them fast. They are only free for this week. Come next week you can expect to drop $4 for the two songs.
Times like these I wish I had Guitar Hero World Tour. You see, I am a die hard Springsteen fan and the only thing that would be better than listening to his music would be rocking out to it. This is the only time I wish I had Guitar Hero rather than Rock Band. If anyone from Harmonix is reading this, please work on getting some Springsteen DLC. I would sell my soul for “Working on the Highway” or “I’m Going Down.”
