There’s been a heightened interest in Olympics games over the last 12 months, with many mascots getting in on the action. The highly amusing Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games (subject of GGL’s Up All Night 2) is just one example.

It should come as no surprise, then, that there’s also a realistic Olympics game in the work. Behold: Beijing 2008!

GGL’s Digital Games is a worldwide online tournament that will have its Global Finals held as part of the Our Olympic Organizing Committee’s welcome events hosted by the China Government. Ladder play is underway for DG, and you can register by visiting dg.ggl.com.

A little while ago, I made a post about the upcoming FPS Aliens: Colonial Marines. Today we some gameplay details were released for this upcoming phallic-shaped-cranium title.

First off, the game wont be constricted to the familiar claustrophobic hallways of the movies. There will be outdoor sections of the game. The game will offer a variety of mission objectives. Instead of just progressing through levels, some missions will force you to set up turrets and barricade doors in an effort to make a stand. Also the game will feature quick-time events, ala God of War. Lastly, and most importantly, there will be realistic (well at least to the Aliens universe) acid blood. It will not only hurt you but will melt through the environment.

All in all I’m super excited about this game. Hopefully it will turn out well…

Dreamcast WARNINGFor the last couple of days, a certain major videogaming blog that shall remain nameless has been sending gamers to a Dreamcast 10th anniversary site. Unfortunately the site has been outed as a phishing scam — the site’s anonymous operators collecting visitors personal information for nefarious purposes.

We can thank Joystiq for the warning — they uncovered the fact that Sega no longer owns the URL in question.

Sega says they are considering “appropriate measures.”

A few days ago I posted a news item about Aliens: Colonial Marines, promising more details when available. Sega and Gearbox have let some details loose.

Aliens: Colonial Marines will be available on PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 sometime this year. Focusing on squad based combat, you will take on the role of a space marine and battle hordes of our favorite xenomorphs.

The story is penned by Bradley Thompson and David Weddle, of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine & Battlestar Galactica. Featuring classic Aliens weapons like flamethrowers and smart guns, you and up to three of your friends can play cooperatively and try to survive against these perfect killing machines.

An intrepid hacker by the alias drkIIRaziel got Sega’s Naomi BIOS running on a Dreamcast emulator. For those of you who don’t know the Dreamcast is the parent system of the Naomi board.

While the BIOS crack is a big deal, you can’t run your favorite games yet. A lot more needs to happen behind the scenes before games are actually up and running–a BIOS alone does not make a system.

Still, you can always hope to play such Dreamcast classics as Ikaruga, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and Ferrari F355 Challenge on your computer in the future.

Here’s a video of drkIIRaziel running Naomi bios on the Dreamcast emulator nullDC (though if you don’t speak machine code you’ll probably have a hard time making heads or tails of it): Continued…

The Virtua Fighter series has always left me satisfied; I even was to far as to get a Sega Saturn for Virtua Fighter 2. The latest incarnation, Virtua Fighter 5, has kept me entertained like its previous incarnations.

Today a new patch is out for VF5 on the Xbox 360. The issues addressed are somewhat frivolous, but help make a great game better. You are now able to select costume-specific pants when using an alternate outfit. Also, you can save replays of online fights.

The official list of changes is after the jump. Continued…

The SEGA Dreamcast was one of the most innovative consoles of its time. It was the first systems to allow online play. Its visual memory units were pretty cool, no more useful than a memory card, but cool nonetheless.

Well, the Internet is ablaze with rumors that SEGA is developing a Dreamcast 2. The fuel to this fire is that Sega has filed a new application to keep the Dreamcast trademarked. The trademark application refers to: “Home video game machines; player-operated electronic controllers for electronic video game machines; video game interactive controller, namely, hand held pads, and floor pads or mats; joysticks for video games; computer cursor control devices, namely, computer mouse; flash memory cards; video game software, computer game programs.”

The real proof, according to the rumors, is that original Dreamcast never had any floor pads, or flash memory cards. According to hopeful Dreamcast fans, that must mean they are making a new console. To the eyes of the jaded gamer, this just means that SEGA is trying to protect the Dreamcast name.

You can find the trademark application here.

As is the norm, Japanese-developed games can get a bit odd. The latest title that causes a good ol’ scratch to the head is the Wii game Ghost Squad from Sega — while this isn’t a new announcement, chances are you probably haven’t heard of it before. If you’re ready to see a shooter like no other, then hit the jump and prepare to be in awe as you gander at the latest screenshots released for the title.

In true breaking news style, this story should definitely be taken seriously among the ranks of pro gamers and gamers alike here at GGL: Sonic is being slowed down for the upcoming Mario and Sonic at the Olympics game for the Nintendo Wii. I know, I know, put down the pitchforks and check out the details.

In the same way that skill is removed from Mario Kart, Sega is looking to go the same route with adding Sonic to the upcoming Beijing Olympics tie-in Mario and Sonic at the Olympics — Mario, the most abused character in gaming history. Here’s exactly what Sega wants:

“The great thing about this is it’s similar to Mario Kart in leveling the playing field. Sonic isn’t always going to win the 100 metre dash; it’s really up to the players and how well they use the nunchuk and remote.”

He continues: “Mario and Luigi for example are great all-rounders. Their stats are spread across speed, acceleration and dash. Sonic meanwhile has a good top speed but his acceleration is low. It’s a real balancing act. We’re trying to go for that mass-appeal like Mario Kart; it crosses all boundaries. Kids can pick up and play Mario Kart and have a great time, but it’s really fun at home with those core gamers who replay and replay.”
