PS3s for sale! Two for one! Okay, three for one! I pay you!Hey, you know the Cell processor, the thing on your PlayStation 3’s motherboard that makes the console so kickass?

Yeah, Sony just sold it.

Sony announced today that it is selling it’s advanced computer chip operations, including the lauded Cell chip, to Toshiba for ¥100 billion ($858 million). Toshiba has been a partner in developing the chip, and will continue to produce the processor for PS3 consoles.

It is estimated that Sony spent ¥200 billion ($1.7 billion) developing Cell. Their chip unit lost money last year.

IBM, also a partner in developing the Cell, will continue to work on improvements.

Sony is scaling back on unprofitable businesses such as chip development, and giving its gaijin chairman, Welshman Howard Stringer, funds to invest in factories to make more televisions and digital cameras.
