Today, Epic released a Bonus Pack for Unreal Tournament 3. Arriving on PlayStation 3 and PC, the free map pack brings back two classics and one new creation. The classics are of “Morbias” and “Facing Worlds”, from the original Unreal Tournament. The new map, designed specifically for Capture the Flag, is “Searchlight.”

There has been no word about these maps coming to the Xbox 360 version. I suspect that it has something to do with Microsoft wanting to charge for them; however, that is just speculation.

To get these maps, PlayStation 3 users can pull it off the PlayStation Network. PC gamers can head over to the Unreal Tournament 3 site and download them there.

As of today, Epic Games’ Unreal series is available on Steam.

The entire series is available as a package deal for $59.99. It includes Unreal Gold, Unreal 2: The Awakening, Unreal Tournament: Game of the Year Edition, Unreal Tournament 2004: Editor’s Choice Edition, and Unreal Tournament 3.

You can also snag them individually. UT: GOTY is a paltry $8.95, which is not much to pay for a game that had arguably the best CTF action in a decade (in my opinion, of course).

Follow to Steampowered for the package deal.

The latest issue of GamePro has news about Microsoft closing a deal to acquire Gears of War developer Epic Games; allegedly, the deal could cost as much as as $1 billion dollars.

Hold on, let me get my giant mound of salt. Okay.

If this turns out to be true, Microsoft would own the much hyped and Epic-developed Unreal Engine 3, used in the already mentioned Gears of War and Unreal Tournament 3.

Right now, this is just a rumor due to many reasons, obviously, and the price is only one of them. DevelopMag has Internet quote machine (and Epic VP) Mark Rein saying that the billion dollar rumor is only half of what Epic is really worth. Continued…

Shortly after Evil Geniuses announced its Unreal Tournament 3 squad, GGL Wire was able to get in touch with manager Alex Garfield and the rest of the team for a thorough grilling. We covered the impetus for creating an EG UT3 squad, the selection process, and some background information about the team. Let’s get to it:

GGL Wire: Is the EG UT3 team salaried?

Alex Garfield: No, however with this EG covers all travel, hardware, and competition costs. It also means that we do not take a percentage of the players’ winnings.

GGL Wire: What was the impetus for forming the EG squad? Do you (Alex) know something that the general gaming public doesn’t about next season’s CGS game picks?

Garfield: The reasoning behind EG’ venture into UT is extremely straightforward. First of all, it’s a very well-tenured brand of dueling game with an already-established community with its own stars and history. Secondly, it looks absolutely incredible, and serves any hardware company well (this, I believe, is proven by the fact that it’s already becoming a relatively popular “booth game”). Lastly, its cross-platform appeal is a huge plus. I believe the gap between PCs and consoles is quickly closing; in 5 or 10 years, there very well may be little to no difference between the two. And so I believe that cross-platform titles like UT3 are crucially important from a broader perspective. Continued…

Epic is at it again by releasing a changelog to the new beta patch for Unreal Tournament 3, version 1.2. It’s worth noting that this patch isn’t yet released, so this serves only as a preview for you loyal UT3 owners out there (sadly, the game is a dismal seller).

The changes are as follows:

Gameplay:
- Increased UTGame MaxPlayersAllowed to 64.
- Fixed leviathan turret instant refire exploit.
- Fixed errant lock on warnings when no longer in vehicle.
- Fixed first person weapons in demo playback.
- Fixed translocator telefrag victim message.
- Fixed encouragement sounds not being randomly picked by bots.
- Implemented viewobjective spectating system for Warfare.
- Fixed berserk held by driver applying to all vehicle turrets.
- Only force low gore on German versions that were low gore only before being patched. Continued…

Epileptic Gaming’s own djWHEAT reviewed Unreal Tournament 3 for the PlayStation 3 yesterday, showing the keyboard and mouse controls, mod installation, and much more. We’ve culled the tutorials from the show, so check out these clips and stay tuned for more like them in the very near future.

Today we’re taking a look at Action Cam, the first user-released mod for the PS3 version of Unreal Tournament 3.

This is actually a bit of history in the console space since this sort of thing has never been supported before, but I do owe you a bit of a warning. If you are at all familiar with PC mods, then the very word “mod” already brings certain things to mind.

Let me just say that Action Cam is not a mod in the traditional sense, it’s actually just a mutator, and a simple one at that. Continued…

Last night on the Epic forums, Mark Rein, Vice President of Epic Games, left a message concerning the PS3 cooker for the Unreal Engine 3 editor. Apparently the editor is in the final stages of testing and could be out next week.

The actual post goes:

I just wanted to give you an update:

We’re very close to releasing an update to the Unreal Engine 3 editor, that comes with the PC version of UT3, that will allow UT3 mod-makers to cook their mods into the required PS3 format. We’ve been doing some internal testing and we’re hoping to expand to a wider group tomorrow or Friday. If all goes well then we should see the update released next week which is what I expect will happen. Obviously the process works, as we put out a few mods before Christmas and people seem to be playing them, but it is the update to the editor that we’re testing.

Happy New Year!

This is fantastic news for PS3 gamers. Some of the most popular games started out as mods, case and point Counter-Strike. Who knows what is in store for the Unreal Tournament 3 community?

Yesterday Unreal Tournament 3 for the PlayStation 3 got its first user made content. The first content is a map, DM-Shrine and was made by Thomas Browett, an English graphic designer. This map was originally made on the PC, but Epic converted it to be compatible with the PS3 version. This had to be done because Epic hasn’t finished the toolkit for the PS3 yet.

You can get the map here.

To install it, you must follow these directions. Continued…

Last month’s sales numbers are in, and they spell bad news for PC gamers. The system destroyer Crysis, which was released Nov. 13, only sold 86,633 units. Needless to say, this is surprising for such a critically acclaimed game. Even worse, Unreal Tournament 3, which was released Nov. 19, only sold 33,995 units.

What does this mean for the PC market? Unfortunately this might make game producers think twice when it comes to releasing games on the PC. As an avid PC gamer, this news is heart-breaking to me. I just hope that these numbers will shoot up when people get new PCs and spending money for Christmas. At least the PC has the cash cow Wold of Warcraft to keep game makers interested.

Read Crysis sales in crisis; UT3 gets fragged too

Judging from the player count it seems Unreal Tournament 3 is being kept alive by players training for these tournaments. Hopefully things pick up after Christmas, as I believe the game deserves better.ESL Quickcups
