The Cyberathlete Professional League, grandfather of professional gaming, is allegedly closing its doors, bringing an end to an 11-year long saga. No timeline has been given, but staff layoffs have already begun according to CAL Warcraft 3 operations manager Martijn Bloemheuvel.

[Update: The post has since been removed, however, you can see a full screenshot of the post below after the jump.]

Bloemheuvel confirmed that Chris Moncivalles, longtime commissioner of the Cyberathlete Amateur League and CPL, was the first to go. He also stated that he will attempt to call into Epileptic Gaming’s Faces for Radio show at 8PM ET Tuesday, Feb. 12 to go over the situation with hosts Marcus “djWHEAT” Graham and Robert Summa.

Moncivalles and Angel Munoz, founder and president of the CPL, refused comment. However, Moncivalles no longer appears on the CPL Staff list (compare to Google’s cached version).

News of the shutdown follows a rumored buyout of the CPL by Play&Trade, which has since fallen through. As part of the deal, Angel Munoz, founder and president of the league, was to join the Play&Trade organization, but reportedly refused to move himself and his family across the country. Continued…

Following Starcraft’s no-CD patch, Blizzard released one for Warcraft III. Needless to say, the community is a little less than pleased. The balance patch for Warcraft III was promised for last year, and has supposedly been Blizzard’s top priority. The enormous changelog follows:

-Warcraft III no longer requires to the CD to play.

Fans with peg legs and parrots will be overjoyed to know they have 700mb more space on their hard drive if they’re using ISOs, while the few of us still using an actual CD can rejoice and store it away when we reformat.

The news is official now - SK Gaming’s new Warcraft 3 player for 2008 is Seo Woo ‘ReiGn’ Kang. He joins Daniel ‘Miou’ Holthuis, June ‘Lyn’ Park, Kim ‘ReMinD’ Sung Sik and Seong Deok ‘SoJu’ Lee, making SK the strongest lineup on earth.

The quartet or Koreans in the team is the very same that played for World Elite, when the team was one of the best ever Warcraft 3 Champions League teams. It has got two world class Night Elves, arguably the world’s best Orc player and now a world class Undead player. With the addition of a strong European Human miou (stayed in the team most likely because he is German), SK looks like an extremely strong all-round product.

The depths of the internet have got many a word written about the balance in Warcraft 3, but very few from people who understand the game as deeply as Manuel “Grubby” Schenkhuizen. The Dutch Warcraft 3 superstar has written an article for esportsglobal.com about it, proving that playing a video game is only one of his talents.

The column called “Fickle balance” shows a very interesting perspective on several issues, in particular people’s attitudes towards perceived imbalances in the game. The piece is well worth a read. Here is a taste:

Which strategy is balanced and which is imbalanced? It seems there is an opinion for every grain of sand in the Sahara Desert and like the sand; they are blown away just as easily with every gust of wind. Indeed, I find that the balance in Warcraft III can be viewed just so: waves ripple through the community with a fresh wind every few weeks and completely shatter our previous suppositions. Those people that stick with their earlier conclusions find themselves outnumbered by the ones who ride the wave, unless their mind stays unchanged until the next wave when a strategy becomes imbalanced – for the second time.

The Warcraft 3 silly season continues with significant players changing teams. Yesterday, the news of Mykhaylo “HoT” Novopashin joining Gravitas Gaming was made official.

SK Gaming released their Ukrainian player one month before the expiration of his contract. One of the best players in Europe, HoT fell victim to SK’s acquisition of three Korean players earlier this year. With Night Elves such as Kim “ReMinD” Sung Sik and Lee “SoJu” Sung Duk, the team did not need a fourth one.

Gravitas Gaming was the most convincing of the teams looking to sign HoT. They have completed a very impressive lineup of Russian-speaking Warcraft 3 players, with star player Mikhail “XyLigan” Ryabkov and Oleg “TitaN” Kuptsov, Robert “Rob” Abdrakhmanov, Oleg “TitaN” Kuptsov, Boris “Quai” Lekontsev and Vladislav “Frozen” Baranov.

The transfer speculation around Yoan ”ToD” Merlo, one of the world’s best Warcraft 3 players, is now over. The French superstar joined the German team Mousesports today.

After ToD left Four Kings a couple of weeks ago, most of the top WC3 teams in the world were considering contracting the charismatic player. The problem was his price tag, since ToD is one of the most successful players in the world and the most popular European player in China. It is estimated that a player of his caliber can cost even up to $5,000 a  month, so only a few teams were in the frame to get him. Continued…

The Player Awards for the Warcraft 3 Champions League season XII have been announced during the WC3L finals in Cologne last weekend. SK Gaming’s June “Lyn” Park was named Most Valuable Player, HyoSub “FoCuS” Eom (Meet Your Makers) won the Most Improved Player title and Jang “WhO” Du Sub (Beijing eSports Team) got the Rookie of the Season award. SK Gaming are the new champions of the Warcraft 3 Champions League after defeating Meet Your Makers in last weekend’s LAN finals in Cologne. SK have waited ten long seasons for this victory.

It is surprising that despite having had superstars like Fredrik “MaDFroG” Johansson or Yoan “ToD” Merlo on the roster, SK hadn’t won a WC3L LAN finals before. The team won the second season of the competition, but it took place online entirely.

History was against SK, along with the fact that the twelfth season of the WC3L was arguably the toughest so far. But it was also one of the strongest lineups SK has ever seen and clearly the strongest one this season. Continued…

The recent announcement of the Electronic Sports World Cup re-marrying nVIDIA and moving the final to California has pleased many fans of competitive gaming all over the world. One week after the dissolution of Fnatic’s Warcraft 3 team, only one of its players is still unemployed. Teams aspiring to qualify for the Warcraft 3 Champions League have torn apart Fnatic’s remains like piranhas.

The killing blow dealt to Fnatic came when Fnatic’s best players received offers from other teams. Robert “Rob” Abdrakhmanov and Mikhail “XyLigan” Ryabkov left for Gravitas Gaming and moved in with their team mates in Moscow. Juha-Matti “Satiini” Bäckström joined up with Mortal TeamWork.

The leave of the above players caught Kevin “RotterdaM” van der Kooi and Radoslav “DieSeL” Kolev unawares, but RotterdaM has already found a new home. The second best Dutch Warcraft 3 player will join with the Dutch team Serious Gaming. DieSeL is the one player still without a team. Continued…

Fnatic’s Warcraft 3 team was disbanded today after three of its key members have left for other teams.

Fnatic did not play their Warcraft 3 Champions League playoff to stay in the competition against Four Kings today. The match was a forfeit loss to 4K.

As it turned out, Fnatic’s Russian players Robert “Rob” Abdrakhmanov, Mikhail “XyLigan” Ryabkov and Finnish star Juha-Matti “Satiini” Bäckström received offers from other teams and decided to leave the organization.

This left Fnatic with Kevin “RotterdaM” van der Kooi and Radoslav “DieSeL” Kolev and the options to either try to rebuild the squad or give up. The management chose the latter and disbanded the team. Continued…

June “Lyn” Park has won his second Warcraft 3 major within a month by beating Jang “Spirit Moon” JaeHo 4-0 in the grand final of the Make Games Colorful tournament in China. Does the Orc race have a new Emperor?

The MGC started with a unique round robin stage, followed with a double elimination playoff bracket. In spite of the presence of Manuel “Grubby” Schenkhuizen, Yoan “ToD” Merlo and Kim “SaSe” Hammar, it had four Korean and four Chinese players. Continued…
